Surgical Pathology Technician

Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Pathologist Assistant to join our team at K.A. Recruiting. As a Pathologist Assistant, you will play a critical role in supporting the surgical pathology team by performing various tasks related to specimen processing, examination, and preparation for histologic diagnostic examination.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive and process specimens from the operating room and/or endoscopy suite, ensuring accurate and timely handling.
  • Perform clerical duties in the Surgical Pathology cutting room, including order entry and updates in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Organize and prioritize daily activities, ensuring efficient workflow and high-quality results.
  • Handle small fragments of uncomplicated tissue samples and gross examination of large, complicated surgical specimens.
  • Prepare and cut tissue samples for frozen sections at 5 microns in a cryostat.
  • Perform routine staining and quality control to ensure high standards in the laboratory.
  • Process requests from pathology residents and attending physicians to ensure complete work orders.
  • Procure fresh tissue samples for research and/or specialized studies.
  • Organize and store surgical specimens until discarding, ensuring accurate tracking and retrieval.
  • Use a voice recognition application to dictate gross examination reports.
  • Participate in organ evisceration and brain removal in autopsy cases.
  • Properly dispose of tissue and chemical waste in the cutting room and histology.
  • Perform other functions as departmental needs require.
  • Train other staff on cutting room procedures as needed.

Requirements:

  • State of New York License for Pathologist Assistant required.
  • Cryo-rotary Microtome (Leica, Microm, Tissue-Tek) experience.
  • Laboratory Information System: Epic Beaker knowledge.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures for all Surgical Cutting Room techniques.
  • Knowledge of policies and procedures for all Autopsy techniques.
  • Knowledge of proper operation of all equipment used in Surgical Cutting Room and autopsy suite.
