We are currently seeking a Lead Environmental Planning Specialist for our Austin, TX office, with the possibility of placement in other WSP offices across Texas.

Your Contributions

  • Act as the task lead or project manager for National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) initiatives, including CE, EA, and EIS projects.
  • Draft planning studies, technical documentation, and NEPA reports for various projects.
  • Conduct comprehensive planning studies, corridor assessments, and subarea planning for multimodal transportation initiatives, serving a diverse clientele including municipalities, counties, MPOs, transit agencies, and DOTs.
  • Oversee the preparation and execution of pre-NEPA, feasibility, and support studies for environmental planning endeavors.
  • Lead efforts in data collection, research, documentation, and technical analysis.
  • Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for data evaluation and map creation pertinent to planning studies.
  • Facilitate public engagement and stakeholder participation in planning and environmental assessments.
  • Support business development and nurture client relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assist in the formulation of scopes of work, fee proposals, and technical responses to RFPs.

Candidate Profile

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Planning, Urban Planning, Geography, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • 5 to 7 years of experience in the environmental planning sector, including environmental surveys, fieldwork, habitat assessments, impact evaluations, and permitting processes.
  • Strong analytical skills with experience in research methodologies, local/regional ecology, habitats, and relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • In-depth knowledge of environmental legislation, permitting protocols, compliance practices, and applicable regulatory frameworks at regional, state, and federal levels.
  • Proven experience in leading and reviewing environmental planning technical reports, impact assessments, siting reports, and environmental permit applications.
  • Established track record of collaboration with clients, regulatory agencies, and environmental specialists.
  • Experience conducting Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments in accordance with ASTM standards.
  • Expertise in consulting practices, including NEPA/CEQA analysis and documentation preparation.
  • Strong self-leadership and interpersonal communication skills, capable of effectively engaging with colleagues at all organizational levels.
  • Ability to work autonomously while providing guidance to junior team members, ensuring adherence to quality assurance and quality control standards.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific software (e.g., ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch-Up).
  • Proficient in technical writing and utilizing office automation and communication tools.
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving abilities to derive conclusions from data and identify effective solutions for project objectives.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and compliance with WSP's health, safety, and conduct policies.
  • Flexibility to accommodate project-specific schedules that may extend beyond standard work hours.
  • Willingness to travel as required by project needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree is preferred.
  • Relevant Professional Licensure/Certification.
