Senior Environmental Protection Specialist

The Senior Environmental Protection Specialist (EPS IV) plays a crucial role within the Blood Lead Surveillance Branch, reporting directly to the Case Coordination Supervisor.

This position involves coordinating and executing environmental lead assessments to identify sources of lead exposure. Collaboration with the Environmental Lead Investigation Coordinator is essential to ensure investigations are scheduled in accordance with established protocols. This role requires overnight travel to various locations to evaluate their effects on public health.

Engagement with primary stakeholders, including parents and healthcare professionals, is necessary to gather data and input investigation outcomes into surveillance systems.

Maintaining communication with state, city, and local governmental entities is vital for distributing program findings to parents, property owners, and healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conducts comprehensive environmental lead assessments to identify sources of lead exposure. Collects environmental samples and data on lead exposure throughout the state. Evaluates the environmental, public, and consumer health impacts of facilities or products.

- Establishes and nurtures effective relationships with primary stakeholders (parents, property owners, and healthcare providers) to facilitate data collection.

- Collaborates with other governmental agencies to enhance data collection efforts. Overnight travel is required. (45%)

- Prepares detailed technical reports on investigation findings. Distributes investigation reports and surveys to relevant parties. Oversees the maintenance and operation of environmental monitoring equipment, ensuring proper resourcing, calibration, and consistent care for quality testing and accurate results. (20%)

- Inputs cases and data into tracking databases, adhering to high documentation standards. This includes recording interactions with parents or providers, completed tasks, and compiled data during Environmental Lead Investigations.

- Each investigation necessitates documentation of findings, including locations of identified lead sources and areas of relative safety from lead exposure.

- Participates in the formulation of recommendations for updates to policies and procedures affecting environmental lead investigations.

- This involves documenting findings and assessing their relevance to current guidelines while remaining receptive to changes that enhance work quality and community impact.

- When new legislation is proposed, the EPS IV must evaluate its implications for the branch, considering both federal and state regulations.

- Maintains Lead Risk Assessor certification throughout employment. (10%)

- Completes additional tasks as assigned, including addressing customer service inquiries and providing support to team members. (5%)

- Engages in other duties as assigned, which may include participating in disaster response and recovery efforts or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, potentially requiring alternate shift patterns or locations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Familiarity with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and the structure of public health organizations.
- Proficiency in gathering and analyzing environmental sampling data from diverse sources and evaluating data quality.
- Competence in utilizing computer software for word processing and data analysis, particularly Microsoft applications.
- Understanding of environmental health issues and the effects of lead exposure.
- Ability to communicate effectively in a culturally diverse environment.
- Capability to prepare technical information and present program activities/results to professional audiences and the public.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with staff, the public, and other governmental agencies.
- Strong organizational skills to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Physical ability to climb, bend, and stand for extended periods during investigations.
- Competence in collecting samples related to soil, dust, paint, consumer goods, or other materials.
- Ability to read and interpret small print labels during inspections and investigations.
- Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Willingness to travel up to 75% of the time.
