Position Overview:

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to our Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) Facility and Systems Engineering department. This role operates on a 4x10 schedule, providing a balanced work-life dynamic.

As a leading national laboratory for the Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy sector, INL plays a pivotal role in advancing nuclear research and development. The MFC combines specialized personnel, state-of-the-art facilities, and robust infrastructure to facilitate comprehensive research and development of nuclear fuels, encompassing everything from fuel development to post-irradiation analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize engineering principles to address mechanical challenges related to the dynamics of heat, gas, air, fluids, and solid materials in the design of reliable and efficient machines and systems.
  • Break down project objectives into clear and manageable design specifications.
  • Employ industry-standard design methodologies and technologies to create and validate designs that meet established requirements.
  • Develop mathematical models based on physics to support and verify mechanical, chemical, and electrical system designs.
  • Stay informed about relevant codes and standards applicable to mechanical engineering.
  • Document designs comprehensively, ensuring compliance with design specifications and relevant codes.
  • Establish testing and quality assurance protocols to maintain essential technical features of designs.
  • Oversee fabrication, construction, assembly, and procurement processes to ensure adherence to design specifications.
  • Maintain and evaluate the performance of assigned systems and equipment, providing solutions to technical issues and recommendations for production improvements.
  • Assist in the development of new projects within the laboratory, including proposal and business plan formulation.
  • Ensure design modifications comply with technical baseline requirements and relevant regulations.
  • Manage configuration control of the technical baseline and maintain awareness of system performance through operational reviews.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and analysts to develop experimental requirements and oversee all phases of design, fabrication, and testing.
  • Lead design and fabrication efforts for experiments, ensuring nuclear safety standards are met.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with 6 years of experience; or a PhD with 4 years of experience.
  • Experience level must align with the responsibilities of the position.
  • Eligibility for a Department of Energy clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
