Position Overview:

The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to our Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) Facility and Systems Engineering department. This role operates on a 4x10 schedule, providing a balanced work-life environment.

As a premier national laboratory for the Department of Energy's Nuclear Energy sector, INL plays a pivotal role in advancing nuclear research and development. The MFC is equipped with unique personnel and facilities, enabling comprehensive research and development of nuclear fuels from inception to post-irradiation analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize engineering principles to address mechanical challenges related to the dynamics of heat, gases, fluids, and solid materials, ensuring the design of safe and efficient machines and systems.
  • Break down project objectives into clear and manageable design specifications.
  • Employ industry-standard design methodologies and technologies to create and validate designs that meet established requirements.
  • Develop mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support design verification.
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant codes and standards applicable to mechanical engineering.
  • Document designs comprehensively, ensuring compliance with design specifications and applicable regulations.
  • Establish testing and quality assurance protocols to uphold design integrity.
  • Oversee fabrication and assembly processes to ensure adherence to design specifications.
  • Conduct calculations related to project specifications, including material selection and mechanical design evaluations.
  • Provide innovative solutions to technical issues and recommend enhancements for production processes.
  • Monitor and assess the operational performance of mechanical systems, suggesting maintenance and repair strategies as needed.
  • Assist in the development of new projects, including proposal writing and business planning.
  • Ensure design modifications align with technical requirements and regulatory standards.
  • Maintain configuration management of technical baselines and monitor system performance through operational logs.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop experimental requirements and oversee all phases of design and testing.
  • Lead the design and fabrication of experiments, ensuring compliance with nuclear safety standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with 6 years of experience; or a PhD with 4 years of experience.
  • Experience relevant to the position level.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
