Position Overview:

The Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to our Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) Facility and Systems Engineering department. This role operates on a 4x10 schedule, allowing for every other Friday off.

As a premier national laboratory for the Department of Energy, INL is at the forefront of nuclear research and development, facilitating the advancement of nuclear technologies from conception to practical application. The MFC is equipped with a unique blend of personnel and infrastructure that supports comprehensive research and development of nuclear fuels.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilize engineering principles to address mechanical challenges, focusing on the dynamics of heat, gas, air, fluids, and solid materials essential for designing reliable and efficient systems.
  • Break down project objectives into clear and manageable design specifications.
  • Employ industry-standard design methodologies and technologies to create and validate designs that meet established requirements.
  • Develop mathematical models of mechanical, chemical, and electrical systems to support design verification.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant codes and standards within the engineering discipline.
  • Document designs thoroughly, ensuring compliance with specifications and applicable regulations.
  • Establish testing and quality assurance protocols to uphold design integrity.
  • Oversee fabrication and assembly processes to ensure adherence to design specifications.
  • Manage and maintain assigned systems and equipment, conducting necessary calculations and evaluations.
  • Provide technical solutions and recommendations for enhancing production processes.
  • Monitor and assess the operational performance of mechanical systems, suggesting repair standards and coordinating necessary resources.
  • Contribute to the development of new projects, including proposal and business plan formulation.
  • Ensure that any design modifications align with technical requirements and regulations.
  • Maintain configuration management for the technical baseline of assigned systems.
  • Collaborate with other engineers and analysts to define experiment requirements and oversee all related activities.
  • Lead the design and fabrication of experiments, ensuring compliance with nuclear safety standards.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, with a minimum of 9 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with 6 years of experience; or a PhD with 4 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience relevant to the position.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy clearance, requiring U.S. citizenship.
