General Summary

This position is recognized as the foundational role for all nursing professionals with over a year of experience. The Clinical Nurse Specialist provides and coordinates comprehensive care to patients within a specific clinical area as an integral member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team. This role utilizes the organization's care delivery and professional practice frameworks as a reference for functioning as a professional nurse. The nurse will engage in activities aimed at enhancing personal practice and supporting the goals of the team at the unit level. Accountability is held to patients, families, and team members for the care provided, as well as to the nurse manager for overall work performance. Adherence to Service Standards and the Nursing Mission, Vision, and Values is essential.

Clinical Practice

  • Demonstrates proficiency in caring for the specific patient population; practices independently with a solid foundation of knowledge and clinical skills; actively engages in advancing personal practice.
  • Acts as a clinical resource for colleagues.
  • Integrates evidence-based practices into patient care.
  • Effectively fulfills roles specific to the unit, such as emergency response for critical care, triage for urgent care, etc.
  • Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to plan and coordinate patient care, advocating independently for patient and family needs.
  • Models practices consistent with unit operations to ensure safe, timely, effective, efficient, and patient-centered care.

Professional Development

  • Actively participates in advancing personal nursing practice.
  • Responsible for maintaining competencies required for the specific patient care setting; focuses on personal professional development.
  • Engages in unit-based staff development independently.
  • Demonstrates the ability to serve as a trained preceptor and mentor for new nurses and students.
  • Contributes to the development and evaluation of unit-based orientation and educational activities.
  • Supports the skills and development of nursing support personnel.
  • Completes continuing education annually based on facility minimum requirements.

Service Quality

  • Understands and contributes to unit-based outcomes related to national quality measures and nursing-sensitive indicators.
  • Participates in and endorses elements of research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement.
  • Delivers high-quality, safe, patient-centered care with a focus on exceeding service expectations.
  • Accountable for compliance with regulatory standards and holds others accountable; participates in quality assurance activities as requested.

Patient Safety

  • Takes proactive measures to address observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to the appropriate management authority.
  • Implements policies, procedures, and guidelines consistently in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Fosters effective working relationships and maintains open communication with team members.
  • Identifies potential risks in processes and communicates these to management.
  • Engages in hospital and departmental patient safety initiatives.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates the ability to function in a leadership role within the nursing team.
  • Participates in team-building efforts within the unit.
  • Contributes to staff meetings and briefings regularly.
  • Engages in unit, nursing division, and organizational governance activities.
  • Participates in recruitment and retention initiatives at the unit level.
  • Provides constructive feedback in peer reviews as requested and offers performance feedback under the direction of the nurse manager.

Qualifications

  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the relevant state is required.
  • More than 12 months of nursing experience with solid knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Must meet all unit-specific certification requirements.
