Position Overview

Salary: $85,000-$100,000 (Dependent on Experience)

DEFENSEWERX is a private not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering innovation and collaboration in defense-related projects. We operate in partnership with the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) and its various laboratories, offering flexible work arrangements that support both onsite and remote engagements.

The Innovation Project Manager plays a crucial role in:

  • Collaborating with ERDC personnel to explore, design, implement, and facilitate technological challenges and intellectual property commercialization initiatives.
  • Overseeing projects that identify and support ERDC innovation through research initiatives and IP commercialization.
  • Managing a diverse portfolio of projects at different stages of development and completion.
  • Encouraging submissions through direct outreach to innovators, businesses, and academic institutions, in partnership with economic development organizations and business associations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and promote technology transfer and transition opportunities in conjunction with the ERDC Office of Research and Technology Transfer (ORTT).
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of:
    • Capabilities provided through the Partnership Intermediary Agreement (PIA).
    • ERDC's strategic objectives regarding technology transfer and transition.
    • Capabilities and priorities of ERDC laboratories.
    • Government acquisition and collaboration methods, including FAR, OTA/BOTAA, and Broad Agency Announcements.
    • Intellectual property (IP) patenting and licensing practices.
  • Work alongside the EWX Chief Innovation Officer (CIO) and team members to identify and support project opportunities.
  • Consult on the effective use of EWX tools and resources for individual ERDC projects.
  • Design, package, and promote technological challenges to enhance collaboration with industry and academia.
  • Advise on targeted promotional strategies based on industry and university specialties, supply chains, and other relevant factors.
  • Contribute to ERDC's IP commercialization strategy by evaluating and promoting select technologies.
  • Facilitate process mapping, project planning, and overall project management.
  • Utilize digital platforms such as Trello and Hubspot to manage project details.
  • Conduct market research to expand contact lists for project promotion.
  • Support the establishment of vendor and collaborative agreements with businesses and academic institutions.
  • Represent EWX at key events, including conferences and speeches.
  • Contribute to the growth and success of EWX and DEFENSEWERX.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Candidates must demonstrate a strong background in training, education, and experience relevant to the role.

  • A Bachelor's degree (or higher) in engineering, science, or management, with 3-5 years of experience in technology project management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a collaborative approach.
  • Proficiency in processes and tools that facilitate teamwork across multiple complex projects.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Experience in project management, process improvement, and problem-solving, preferably in innovation contexts.
  • Familiarity with technology IP commercialization.
  • Capability to build and maintain a network of entities for technology transfer.
  • Understanding of federal government contracting, technology transfer, commercialization, and product development.
  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Successful completion of a background check prior to employment.
  • Ability to obtain a DoD Security Clearance.
  • No conflicts of interest affecting DEFENSEWERX or the Department of Defense.
  • Willingness to travel (< 20-30%).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), CRM software, and web-based project management tools.
