Role Overview: Safety Operations Leader

We are seeking a Safety Operations Leader for our Mid-Atlantic Division, responsible for overseeing safety initiatives across multiple states, including MD, DC, VA, and DE. This position requires significant fieldwork, with travel expectations of up to 80%.

The Safety Operations Leader will collaborate with field teams to enhance safety measures, manage audits, and provide coaching to ensure compliance with safety standards.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct all safety initiatives within the designated area. Conduct unscheduled Safety Surveys and Policy Reviews (SSPR) across division stores, focusing on areas needing improvement. Collaborate with Division Staff to address any identified deficiencies and recommend corrective actions to management. Foster open communication channels, encouraging team members to share ideas, suggestions, and concerns, and evaluate each for potential action. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations, including OSHA standards, and oversee various safety protocols such as Emergency Evacuation and Ergonomics. Analyze Safety Tracking tools to monitor safety performance, identify areas for improvement, and work with District Managers to address specific safety training and compliance issues. Oversee the training of new employees on safety policies and procedures, assessing the need for additional training based on various factors, including previous incidents. Manage accident reporting and investigation processes, providing guidance as necessary. Collaborate with Associate Relations to recommend disciplinary actions for serious safety violations. Supervise safety committee activities within stores to ensure effective meetings and provide necessary training. Participate in various meetings, including those with store directors and department heads, and engage in public speaking as required.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational Background:

Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.

Skills & Experience:

3-5 years of experience in grocery retail, with a focus on safety, loss control, or claims management preferred. Previous experience in training and auditing is advantageous. Familiarity with Federal Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHA) is preferred. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The role may involve working in a temperature-controlled setting. Ability to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods is required. Proficiency in using office equipment such as calculators and computers is necessary. The position may require physical activities such as bending, twisting, and reaching. The work environment is fast-paced, with potential evening and weekend responsibilities. Frequent travel to various store locations within the division is required, necessitating personal transportation and the ability to stay overnight as needed. Strong analytical skills and mental alertness are crucial for accurate data interpretation and task completion.

Travel Expectations: Up to 80% travel across the division.
