Role Overview: Safety Operations Manager

We are seeking a Safety Operations Manager for our Mid-Atlantic Division. This role will involve supporting various states, including MD, DC, VA, and DE, and will require significant travel, potentially up to 80% of the time.

This position will assist in gathering and analyzing data as directed by the Lead Safety Manager. You will collaborate closely with field operations teams to mentor, manage, and evaluate store safety protocols.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct all safety initiatives within the designated area. Conduct unscheduled Safety Surveys and Policy Reviews (SSPR) across all division stores, focusing on key locations. Discuss findings with Division Staff and offer support to rectify any identified issues. Propose corrective actions to the District Manager that require management approval. Foster open communication channels, encouraging store and division personnel to share innovative ideas, suggestions, and concerns, and evaluate each for relevance and necessary follow-up. Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety and health regulations (OSHA), including but not limited to: General Industry Safety Orders, Uniform Fire Code, Life Safety Code, Employee Right-to-Know, Community Right-to-Know, Hazardous Waste Disposal, Lockout/Tagout, Powered Industrial Truck (PIT), Emergency Evacuation, Ergonomics, and OSHA Recordkeeping. Review Safety Tracking tools to monitor and assess safety performance, identifying areas for improvement and collaborating with District Managers to address specific safety training, committee activities, accident investigations, floor maintenance, and on-site safety evaluations. Oversee the training of new employees regarding safety policies and procedures. Assess the need for additional or refresher training based on new risks, recurring issues, and return-to-work scenarios following workplace injuries. Conduct group training sessions as necessary to cover relevant topics. Manage store accident reporting and investigation processes, providing guidance as needed. Collaborate with Associate Relations to recommend disciplinary measures for store personnel who violate safety or recordkeeping standards. Supervise store safety committee activities to ensure meetings are productive and effective. Provide training as required. Participate in store director and department meetings, career development training, Risk Management continuing education, claim reviews, and individual store safety committee meetings. Public speaking to diverse groups is also a requirement.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Educational Background:

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.

Skills & Experience:

3-5 years of experience in grocery retail and prior safety management, loss control, or claims handling is preferred. Previous experience in training and auditing is advantageous. Familiarity with Federal Occupational Safety and Health Standards (OSHA) is preferred. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work may take place in a climate-controlled setting. The role requires sitting, standing, or walking for extended periods. Prolonged periods at a desk or computer may be necessary. Use of calculators, keyboards, telephones, and other office equipment is expected during the workday. Tasks may involve stooping, bending, twisting, and reaching. The work environment is fast-paced, with some evening and weekend commitments possible. The position necessitates regular travel to various store locations within the division. The incumbent must possess a valid driver's license, have personal transportation, and be available for overnight travel. The ability to navigate through stores, including upper-level offices, back rooms, and production areas, is required. Analytical skills and mental acuity are necessary for accurate and thorough completion of tasks, as well as for data interpretation and analysis. The ability to focus and manage frequent interruptions is essential.

Travel Expectations: Division-wide travel, up to 80%
