Camden, New Jersey, United States Holtec International Full time

Holtec International, along with its subsidiary entities, is at the forefront of developing a consistently safe and secure source of clean energy through nuclear fission, specifically with the SMR-160 small modular reactor. This opportunity is presented by SMR LLC, a proud member of the Holtec International family, recognized as a global turnkey provider of equipment and systems across the nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil fuel power generation sectors.

We invite you to become part of a dynamic and multidisciplinary team of designers and engineers dedicated to shaping the future of nuclear energy. Holtec International is in search of a Nuclear Safety Analysis Engineer to enhance its SMR-160 Deterministic Safety Analysis (DSA) group. This group plays a crucial role in developing methodologies and conducting analyses to ensure that the SMR-160 meets its safety standards and licensing obligations. The analyses encompass evaluations of the reactor core, reactor coolant systems, engineered safety features, containment structures, and radiological release assessments related to anticipated operational occurrences (AOOs), design basis accidents (DBAs), and beyond design basis accidents (BDBAs). Furthermore, the SMR-160 DSA group is tasked with verification and validation activities for the computational codes utilized in these analyses. The Engineer will collaborate within a team engaged in a U.S. Government cost-shared development initiative, necessitating the efficient execution of engineering tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop analytical methodologies and models for the range of AOOs, DBAs, and BDBAs relevant to the SMR-160 reactor design.
  • Conduct simulations for AOOs, DBAs, and BDBAs associated with the SMR-160.
  • Execute code benchmarking and validation analyses to support code qualification and methodology enhancement.
  • Perform pre- and post-test analyses to facilitate Separate Effects and Integral Systems Tests.
  • Create methodology reports, design criteria, and other licensing documentation to aid in licensing processes.
  • Engage with regulatory bodies to clarify methods, models, and analyses.
  • Collaborate with other engineering teams as necessary to support comprehensive design and licensing initiatives.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Experience with relevant systems, design, and analysis in the nuclear power sector.
  • Ability to resolve issues and make informed engineering decisions based on experience and sound engineering principles.
  • Capability to work independently and collaboratively on specific assignments while managing multiple priorities.
  • Proven technical writing proficiency.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Eligibility to work under 10 CFR Part 810.
Preferred Additional Qualifications:
  • Master's or Doctorate in nuclear engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in performing safety analysis calculations using industry-standard software such as GOTHIC, RELAP5, RETRAN, COBRA, VIPRE, etc.
  • At least three years of experience in developing safety analysis methodologies, including computer code verification and validation.
  • Thorough understanding of U.S. NRC regulations, including NUREG-0800 and Regulatory Guide for Transient and Accident Analysis Methods.
  • Strong grasp of thermal hydraulic behavior in nuclear power plants under both steady-state and transient conditions.
  • Demonstrated technical writing experience through licensing topical reports or safety analysis reports.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems.
  • Programming skills in any language are advantageous.
