The City of Cedar Rapids is seeking a dedicated Civil Engineering Project Coordinator who is enthusiastic about construction and project oversight. The ideal candidate will possess a robust background in project financing and budgeting, along with a thorough understanding of Federal, State, and local regulations pertaining to Capital Improvement Projects (CIP).

About This Opportunity
The role involves managing federal aid construction contracts and overseeing inspection services during capital improvement projects. The Civil Engineering Project Coordinator II position requires a higher level of experience and proficiency in Department of Transportation processes.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as the City's representative for significant construction projects, including federal aid contracts.
  • Develop and implement procedures for the division.
  • Manage contracts and budgets for major construction initiatives and Capital Improvement programs.
  • Oversee inspection activities for major construction projects.
  • Prepare project documentation for federal and DOT audits with support from inspection staff.
  • Negotiate with contractors regarding proposed changes in methodology or plans.
  • Conduct field meetings with contractors, architects, engineers, or work crews.
  • Review and monitor construction design standards, recommending engineering improvements.
  • Resolve contract and contractor disputes.
  • Coordinate construction projects with other City departments, serving as a liaison.
  • Respond to public inquiries regarding contracted construction projects.
  • Collaborate with the Iowa DOT to ensure project funding is secured for anticipated and additional work.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Required Education and Experience

Civil Engineering Project Coordinator I
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in project management or engineering for urban construction projects.
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer in Iowa or the ability to obtain it within six months.
  • An Engineer in Training may be considered if they can obtain Professional Engineer licensure within one year.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population.
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Complete Iowa DOT training within one year of hire.
Civil Engineering Project Coordinator II
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Seven years of experience in public works project management or engineering for urban construction projects.
  • Five years of experience with Federal Aid Contracts, Administration, and Closeout.
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer in Iowa or the ability to obtain it within six months.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population.
Required Licenses or Certifications
  • Complete Iowa DOT training.
  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer issued by Iowa or the ability to obtain it within six months.
Work Schedule
Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:30pm

Annual Salary Ranges
Civil Engineering Project Coordinator I: $83, $112,403.20

Civil Engineering Project Coordinator II: $89, $120,348.80
