Job Overview

Position Summary

Versar, Inc. is seeking a Senior Cybersecurity Architect to enhance the DHS Homeland Security Enterprise Network (HSEN) within the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO). This role involves collaborating with a dynamic team dedicated to implementing cybersecurity measures that fortify DHS enterprise and headquarters networks. The selected candidate will engage with a diverse group of network and security engineers, data center specialists, industry partners, and DHS stakeholder groups comprising over 20 DHS Components.

This initiative focuses on delivering Security Engineering and Architectural Support for various HSEN services, including:

  • Enhancing and modernizing network and security capabilities, incorporating emerging technologies.
  • Providing technical expertise for the design, construction, and enhancement of network and security systems.
  • Ensuring compliance of the network security architecture with federal and DHS security standards and guidelines.
  • Offering performance engineering and network management support, including monitoring through DHS IT Operations tools and technologies.
  • Guaranteeing the operational availability of security tools and infrastructure from the perimeter to the endpoint and data itself.

Core Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the development and enhancement of security tool architecture for operational monitoring.
  • Creating and refining a three-year security architecture roadmap aligned with DHS requirements.
  • Documenting design specifications for a team of Security Engineers, Architects, and Tools Engineers.
  • Designing and developing cybersecurity technologies while integrating new architectural features into existing infrastructures, ensuring the integrity and security of enterprise-wide cyber systems and networks.

Additional Duties

  • Facilitating the integration of security processes, controls, and technologies into technical solutions with a standardized approach to design, development, and testing.
  • Addressing anomalies identified during security assessments, ensuring certification and accreditation.
  • Providing security engineering and subject matter expertise for hardware, software, and networking technologies.
  • Conducting market research, product evaluations, prototyping, integration, development, deployment, and maintenance support for various software and networking technologies.
  • Coordinating the operations of all software and networking technologies.
  • Performing operations and maintenance on software tools and networking infrastructure devices and systems.
  • Creating and maintaining standard Tool Engineering Design Documentation and Test Plans.
  • Developing comprehensive diagrams illustrating the entire configuration and flow among all solution elements.
  • Testing security features of products acquired by DHS stakeholders.
  • Implementing and maintaining a robust capacity management plan for security tools.
  • Designing, implementing, and maintaining continuity of operations for security tool systems.
  • Creating and maintaining custom signature and security feeds for integration with the government's security information and event management (SIEM) system for active monitoring and event retention.
  • Providing application support for the installation of event forwarders on non-security devices.
  • Developing and maintaining Concept of Operations (CONOPS), System Design Document (SDD), and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) documentation.
  • Creating and maintaining Dataflow Diagrams of systems, including ports, protocols, IP addresses, and network segmentation.
  • Deploying and integrating components of the security system according to a detailed Implementation Plan.
  • Offering architectural guidance on network security, engineering, active directory design, application integration, and system hierarchy.
  • Providing subject matter expertise on government-identified security technologies.
  • Supporting systems in emergencies when application administrators require assistance.
  • Creating and deploying custom reports and dashboards (e.g., Splunk, Swimlane, Grafana).
  • Enhancing the portfolio of security monitoring and administration tools, including modernization and emerging technologies.
  • Ensuring compliance with operational requirements, including a disaster recovery strategy for security tools.
  • Recommending configuration management practices and verifying compliance with DHS guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of six (6) years of professional experience in cybersecurity and security solution architecture, systems analysis, design, or development.
  • Experience in U.S. Federal government consulting is preferred.
  • Ability to work independently on a variety of projects and tasks aimed at maturing security processes, tools, and operations.
  • Prior experience within the Department of Homeland Security or another government agency is preferred.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, along with eligibility for a DHS Entry on Duty (EoD).

Education

  • BA/BS in a relevant field; relevant experience may substitute for education.
  • Advanced degrees beyond the minimum requirement in a relevant field may be considered for additional experience.

Desired Software/Hardware Skills

  • Familiarity with tools such as Swimlane and Splunk is a plus.
