The Geotechnical Engineering Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting both the sales and operational teams through various stages of project development. The responsibilities during the design phase include:
  • Thoroughly reviewing and familiarizing oneself with essential background materials such as geotechnical exploration reports, project specifications, and civil/structural blueprints to aid in the design and preparation of technical drawings and calculations.
  • Evaluating different ground enhancement techniques and selecting the most suitable option that aligns with project requirements, which often encompass settlement analysis, bearing capacity, global stability, liquefaction mitigation, and more.
  • Creating cross-sectional views, developing soil profiles, and determining soil characteristics for design purposes.
  • Conducting finite element modeling with software tools like Plaxis to analyze complex soil-structure interactions and assess deformations and stresses within the soil and ground improvement systems.
  • Executing all necessary design calculations and analyses, including but not limited to global stability, settlement, bearing capacity, and the structural and geotechnical capacities of CMCs.
  • Coordinating or drafting design documentation (final design calculations and drawings) in accordance with established design criteria.
As field operations progress, the responsibilities of the design engineer also encompass:
  • Reviewing all Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) measures from the Field Engineer.
  • Preparing standard project documentation, including specifications, methodologies, and testing submissions.
  • Providing prompt responses to inquiries from the project team and addressing any discrepancies with the design.
Throughout the design and fieldwork phases:
  • Defending and clarifying the design rationale and decisions made in the field related to the design.
  • Addressing feedback from reviewers and engaging in discussions with other design team members to secure approval and acceptance of the ground improvement strategy.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Solid understanding of fundamental geotechnical design and calculation principles.
  • Proficient in slope stability analysis and finite element modeling techniques.
  • Skilled in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook; familiarity with AutoCAD is a plus.
  • Highly organized in managing and documenting all assigned responsibilities.
  • Effective communication skills in small group settings, capable of presenting project objectives, policies, facilitating discussions, and providing/receiving constructive feedback.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills for interactions with clients, engineers, and architects.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities with a knack for developing innovative ideas and proposing alternatives to facilitate solutions.
  • Adept at managing multiple tasks, activities, and commitments simultaneously.
