Job Overview


The Principal Engineer within the Projects division serves as a pivotal role overseeing the engineering teams across various Units. This position entails collaboration with Planning & Technology on standards, engagement with project management, and providing expert support throughout the project lifecycle until completion.


This role reports to the Director of Substation, Lines, or Integrated Operations, while working daily within a cross-functional project team to address project requirements as determined by management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee project engineering performance across all phases, including scoping, budgeting, conceptual design, contract management, engineering design, construction, and project closeout.
  • Conduct standard and advanced engineering analyses, designs, and calculations.
  • Lead the development of innovative conceptual designs in accordance with Iberdrola Standards, ensuring external designers maintain consistency across all operating units.
  • Guarantee that all engineering designs comply with applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards.
  • Utilize expertise to mentor and guide engineering staff.
  • Provide technical leadership on complex projects that significantly impact the organization.
  • Support and develop team members in their technical capabilities.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the team.
  • Direct contractors on company policies, standards, and best practices.
  • Work autonomously with minimal supervision.
Skills and Qualifications

Technical Skills/Competencies:

  • Strong theoretical knowledge in Engineering, including Planning, Operations, and Design, with a comprehensive understanding of the business model.
  • Practical engineering experience in Planning, Operations, and Construction, including field experience and standardization.
  • Proficient in documenting and interpreting engineering documentation.
  • Ability to review and approve engineering work to ensure compliance with company standards and specifications.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulatory standards and requirements.
  • For Smart Grids: Knowledge of Networking, Computer Security, and Databases.
Functional/Job-Specific Competencies

  • In-depth understanding of the regulatory environment, including relevant output and incentive mechanisms.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of company, local, state, and national codes and standards.
Substation and Integrated Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge in Substation design and construction for utility environments.
Transmission Lines and Integrated Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge in Distribution and Transmission Lines design and construction for utility environments.
Education & Experience Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering is required.
  • Master's Degree is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Professional Engineering License is preferred.
