Job Title: Senior Staff Accountant

Reports To: Senior Director of Accounting and Administration

Salary: $90,000 - $105,000

Overview

The Senior Staff Accountant is responsible for engaging with various stakeholders, including internal personnel, vendors, financial institutions, and funding sources. This role encompasses transaction-focused accounting responsibilities within a comprehensive accrual-based, fund-oriented accounting framework. Key functions include managing the general ledger, performing reconciliations, overseeing month-end closing processes, and preparing financial statements using Sage Intacct. Additionally, the Senior Staff Accountant will support the Senior Director of Accounting and Administration with various projects and initiatives. This position requires the ability to operate with minimal supervision while handling a diverse range of financial responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee general ledger operations, including the entry of monthly journal entries, execution of month-end closings, and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Act as the primary financial liaison for sub-recipients and funding partners, ensuring accurate transaction recording in accordance with grant agreements and compliance with deliverable timelines.
  • Manage cash receipt and disbursement processes, ensuring timely and precise processing of invoices and payments.
  • Review and supervise subsidiary reconciliations, including cash/investment accounts, intercompany transactions, and fixed assets.
  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies and grant restrictions through diligent monitoring of accounting transactions.
  • Assist in payroll processing by preparing payroll entries and reconciling related reports and accounts.
  • Administer payments for the organization's retirement plan, calculating employer matching contributions in line with plan guidelines.
  • Monitor and reconcile retirement plan contributions.
  • Support Staff Accountant duties during their absence.
  • Maintain organized electronic filing systems for financial documentation.
  • Assist in audit preparation activities.
  • Recommend and implement process enhancements; uphold accounting policies and procedures to ensure adherence to GAAP and regulatory standards.
  • Collaborate with other departments to promote financial transparency and accuracy.
  • Contribute to special projects and process improvements, along with other assigned responsibilities.

Qualifications

To succeed in this position, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

Education/Experience: Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year college or technical institution; or six months to one year of relevant experience and/or training; or a combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read and understand simple instructions and correspondence; capable of writing basic correspondence; able to effectively present information in small group settings.

Mathematical Skills: Proficient in calculating figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, and percentages; able to apply basic algebra and geometry concepts.

Reasoning Skills: Capable of applying common sense to follow instructions; able to address problems involving multiple concrete variables.

Computer Skills: Proficient in various software applications, including word processing, spreadsheets, accounting software, and database management systems. High proficiency in Excel is required; experience with Sage 300 is preferred.

The work environment is typically quiet, allowing for focused work.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this role, the employee is frequently required to sit and use hands for tasks. Occasional reaching and communication is also necessary.
