Job Overview

POSITION TITLE: FINANCIAL CONTROLLER

Grand Canyon Conservancy (GCC) serves as the official nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park, dedicated to fostering a deep appreciation for the park's natural and cultural heritage. Our mission is to inspire future generations to support and cherish the Grand Canyon through philanthropic efforts, educational initiatives, and retail operations.

We are in search of a Financial Controller who will oversee financial reporting and analysis for GCC. This role includes the preparation of regular financial statements, updating forecasts, conducting data analysis, and maintaining accurate accounting records. The Financial Controller plays a crucial role in ensuring the Finance Department meets its obligations in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

This position is remote (within a 6-hour drive of the South Rim) and is a full-time, exempt role that offers benefits, with occasional travel required. The Financial Controller will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and will supervise the Accounting Manager.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The responsibilities may vary based on workload and include, but are not limited to, the following:

Finance and Accounting Duties

  • Maintain the chart of accounts and an organized electronic accounting filing system.
  • Oversee month-end closing activities and ensure weekly reconciliation of GCC's operating bank account.
  • Reconcile all Balance Sheet accounts and maintain detailed financial records.
  • Manage employee benefits accounting and funding.
  • Support the CFO in preparing financial reports in compliance with GAAP.
  • Implement a system of controls and segregation of duties over accounting transactions.
  • Train staff on the accounting system and develop electronic-based work processes.
  • Collaborate with external auditors during annual financial audits.
  • Supervise the accounting team and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate training programs for new hires and assess training needs for existing staff.
  • Participate in annual inventory counts and perform internal audits.

Financial Reporting and Analysis

  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of reconciliations each month.
  • Develop and automate financial statements and analyses as required.
  • Analyze data to provide financial and operational metrics.
  • Assist management in identifying causes of budget variances.
  • Collaborate with other departments to finalize monthly report narratives.
  • Provide financial analysis for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations.
  • Assist the CFO with annual reports, budget preparation, and Board presentations.
  • Ensure compliance with reporting requirements from government agencies.

Payroll and Human Resources Functions

  • Process bi-weekly payroll in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
  • Ensure proper accounting for payroll, taxes, and employee benefits.
  • Work with third-party payroll processors to maintain compliance.
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements to payroll processes.
  • Serve as backup for HR functions related to new hires and benefits.

Philanthropy Accounting Responsibilities

  • Stay updated on GAAP and FASB standards for philanthropic activities.
  • Maintain accurate records for revenue recognition and adjustments.
  • Monitor accounting accuracy between restricted and unrestricted funds.
  • Account for investment and endowment fund activities.
  • Provide reporting support to the Philanthropy department.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business administration.
  • At least 7 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance.
  • Experience in reporting and analysis is essential.
  • Knowledge of non-profit accounting and financial regulations.
  • Advanced understanding of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license.
  • Able to work remotely within a 6-hour driving distance from Grand Canyon South Rim.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • CPA or CMA certification is preferred.
  • Experience with automated financial reporting systems.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and prepare comprehensive reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive work environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This role primarily involves sedentary office work, requiring extended periods at a computer for tasks such as data entry.
