Senior Director of Development for the Mission Valley Innovation District

Job Summary

This is a senior-level position that will lead the development of a comprehensive fundraising strategy for the San Diego State University Innovation Hub, a 20,000 square foot building that will serve as a hub for entrepreneurship and innovation in the Mission Valley area. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of raising funds for economic development, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and will be responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, and soliciting philanthropic gifts from a wide range of donors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy for the Innovation Hub, including annual giving, major gifts, and planned giving.
  • Identify, qualify, cultivate, and solicit philanthropic gifts from a wide range of donors, including individuals, foundations, and corporations.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including university leadership, faculty, and staff, as well as external partners and donors.
  • Collaborate with the university's development team to ensure alignment with the university's overall development strategy and goals.
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, including identifying and qualifying new prospects, cultivating relationships, and soliciting gifts.
  • Work closely with the university's marketing and communications team to develop and implement a comprehensive marketing and communications plan to promote the Innovation Hub and the university's development efforts.
  • Stay up-to-date on best practices in fundraising and development, and apply this knowledge to improve the university's development efforts.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience in fundraising and development, with a proven track record of raising funds for economic development, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
  • Deep and broad connections in the San Diego and Southern California philanthropic community.
  • Proven experience in all facets of development, including gift administration, gift acceptance, prospect management, research, annual giving, volunteer management, and communications.
  • Demonstrated success as a development professional in a donor-centered fundraising environment.
  • Demonstrated success in providing volunteer leadership.
  • A high degree of interest in and commitment to higher education and philanthropy, and the ability to articulate a compelling case for annual support of a public institution of higher education.
  • Ability to utilize computer applications and databases to correspond, prepare written materials, and manage time/workflow.
  • Advanced degree in a related field preferred.
