About the Role

Hackensack Meridian Health is seeking a skilled Telephone Operator to join our team. As a key member of our customer service team, you will be responsible for answering phone calls, routing and directing calls as necessary, and providing exceptional service to our patients and visitors.

Responsibilities

  • Answering Calls: Answer hospital incoming calls within 3 rings, using proper questioning techniques to determine the caller's needs and connecting them with the appropriate extension or department.
  • Paging and Communication: Contact hospital personnel as requested through the paging system, using it accurately and consistently.
  • On-Call Scheduling: Handle calls for physician's on-call according to established procedure, explaining the process to staff as needed.
  • Record Keeping and Documentation: Maintain accurate records and documentation, ensuring a consistently high level of productivity.
  • Medical Terminology and Procedures: Familiarize yourself with medical center procedures and terminology to facilitate callers to the appropriate location.
  • Caller Information: Provide accurate information regarding patient location, visiting hours, and organizational information, demonstrating knowledge of hospital departments, services, and policies.
  • Communication and Initiative: Keep callers informed about the status of their call, taking initiative to open lines of communication when on hold or in a ring/no answer situation.
  • PBX Console and Data Entry: Operate a data-linked multi-position PBX console automated system, demonstrating understanding of PBX console features and completing calls in an expeditious yet courteous manner.
  • Directory Information and Emergencies: Provide directory information for internal and external callers through the computer system, responding immediately to all emergencies and alarms.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Perform other duties and projects as assigned, adhering to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Requirements

  • Excellent Communication Skills: Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer Proficiency: Be proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite platforms.
