JOB SUMMARY:


The WIC Nutrition Specialist is responsible for assessing nutrition risk eligibility, customizing the WIC food package, and delivering nutrition education for the WIC Program.

This role serves as a key resource for WIC staff and provides consultation as necessary.
All responsibilities are carried out in compliance with Federal, State, Agency, and WIC program policies and procedures.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments, determine nutrition risk, and enroll eligible participants.
Authorize, tailor, issue, and reissue food packages, including those requiring medical documentation.

Review and approve formula requests that necessitate medical documentation in collaboration with healthcare providers.

Deliver and document participant-focused nutrition education through individual or family sessions and group discussions, tailored to the specific needs and interests of participants.

Facilitate appropriate follow-up referrals to other health and social service agencies for participants, particularly those with additional nutrition or health concerns.

Ensure that referrals for lead testing and immunizations are completed. Monitor participant progress and document outcomes.
Identify the necessity for individual care plans and refer to a Qualified Nutritionist as appropriate.
Implement high-risk care plans established by the Qualified Nutritionist and provide participant-centered counseling for high-risk individuals.

Conduct breastfeeding assessments and offer participant-centered counseling to assist mothers in initiating breastfeeding, establishing a milk supply, exclusively breastfeeding, and continuing breastfeeding.

Address common breastfeeding challenges and issues related to breast pumps.
Refer prenatal and postpartum clients to peer counselors and other breastfeeding support resources.

Assist in planning and evaluating participant-centered nutrition education sessions, both individual and group-based.

Develop, conduct, and assess nutrition training for local agency staff on nutrition education topics.
Orient, train, and mentor new nutrition support staff.
Oversee the duties of a Nutrition Assistant to enhance program services for participants.
Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and skill required for the position.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Familiarity with nutrition education and county health resources relevant to special populations is essential.
Critical thinking skills are necessary to understand the fiscal and nutritional risks associated with the over-issuance of food packages.

Ability to assess nutritional needs and risks beyond standard food packages and make suitable adjustments or substitutions is required.

Proficiency in participant-centered nutrition counseling to facilitate behavioral change is crucial.
Exhibit professionalism, sound judgment, flexibility, courtesy, and integrity.
Strong communication skills are necessary, along with the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Maintain client confidentiality at all times.

Motivation, the ability to connect with clients in a caring and sensitive manner, and a collaborative work ethic are important.

Attendance at trainings, in-services, and seminars for skill enhancement is required.

Must obtain 24 hours of continuing education every three years in topics relevant to WIC. A valid driver's license with a good driving record is required, along with access to a reliable, properly insured vehicle for travel.

Ability to perform tasks such as regular keyboarding and lifting 5-10% of the time is necessary.
Attention to detail and accuracy is critical, as is the ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment.

Flexibility to work hours as needed to meet program and participant needs, including some evenings and weekends, is essential.

Knowledge of local geography and resources for lower socioeconomic populations is beneficial.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:


Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) or a Bachelor's degree in a relevant health-related field with at least six credit hours in nutrition; or a Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor's degree; Full-Time 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday: 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, with rotating Saturdays as per clinic schedule.
