WIC Nutrition Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY:
The WIC Nutrition Specialist is tasked with assessing nutritional risk eligibility, customizing and prescribing the WIC food package, and delivering nutrition education for the comprehensive WIC Program. This role serves as a key resource for WIC personnel and offers consultation as necessary, ensuring compliance with Federal, State, Agency, and WIC program regulations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct thorough nutrition assessments to identify risks and enroll eligible participants.
- Authorize, tailor, and manage food packages, including those that necessitate medical documentation.
- Evaluate and approve formula requests that require medical documentation in collaboration with healthcare providers.
- Deliver and document participant-focused nutrition education through individual or family sessions and group discussions tailored to participant needs.
- Facilitate appropriate referrals to health and social service agencies for participants with additional nutrition or health concerns.
- Ensure that referrals for lead testing and immunizations are conducted.
- Monitor participant progress and document outcomes effectively.
- Identify the necessity for individual care plans and refer to a Qualified Nutritionist as needed.
- Implement high-risk care plans established by the Qualified Nutritionist and provide tailored counseling for high-risk participants.
- Conduct breastfeeding assessments and offer counseling to support mothers in initiating and maintaining breastfeeding.
- Address common breastfeeding challenges and provide information on breast pumps.
- Connect prenatal and postpartum clients with peer counselors and additional breastfeeding support resources.
- Assist in planning and evaluating participant-centered nutrition education initiatives.
- Develop and conduct training for local agency staff on nutrition education topics.
- Orient and mentor new nutrition support staff.
- Oversee the duties of a Nutrition Assistant to enhance service delivery to participants.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned within the scope of the role.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with nutrition education and community health resources relevant to special populations.
- Strong critical thinking skills with an understanding of the fiscal and nutritional implications of food package over-issuance.
- Ability to assess nutritional needs beyond standard food packages and make necessary adjustments.
- Expertise in participant-centered nutrition counseling aimed at fostering behavioral change.
- Professional demeanor, sound judgment, flexibility, courtesy, and integrity.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
- Commitment to maintaining client confidentiality.
- Motivated with the ability to engage clients in a compassionate and sensitive manner, serving as a positive role model and collaborating effectively with others.
- Willingness to participate in ongoing training and professional development, including obtaining 24 hours of continuing education every three years in relevant WIC topics.
- Possession of a valid New York State Driver's License with a clean driving record; access to a reliable and insured vehicle for travel as required.
- Capability to perform tasks such as regular keyboarding and lifting 25 – 50 pounds occasionally.
- Attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexibility to work hours that meet program and participant needs, including evenings and weekends as necessary.
MINIMUM EDUCATION:
- Registered Nutrition and Dietetics Technician (NDTR/DTR); or
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant health-related field with a minimum of six credit hours in nutrition; or
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor's degree.
Full-Time Position: 37.5 hours per week
Level 4 Position
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM with rotating Saturdays as per clinic schedule
