JOB SUMMARY:

The WIC Nutrition Specialist is responsible for assessing nutrition risk eligibility, customizing and prescribing the WIC food package, and delivering nutrition education for the county-wide WIC Program. This role serves as a vital resource for WIC staff and provides necessary consultations. All responsibilities are executed in compliance with Federal, State, Agency, and WIC program policies and procedures.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments to determine risk and enroll participants.
  • Authorize, tailor, and issue food packages, including those needing medical documentation.
  • Review and approve formula requests that require medical documentation in collaboration with Health Care Providers.
  • Deliver and document participant-focused nutrition education through individual or family sessions and group discussions tailored to participant needs.
  • Provide appropriate follow-up referrals to health and social service agencies for participants with additional nutrition or health concerns.
  • Ensure that referrals for lead testing and immunizations are conducted.
  • Monitor participant progress and document outcomes effectively.
  • Identify the necessity for individual care plans and refer to a Qualified Nutritionist as needed.
  • Implement high-risk care plans established by the Qualified Nutritionist and provide tailored counseling for high-risk participants.
  • Conduct breastfeeding assessments and offer counseling to assist mothers in initiating and maintaining breastfeeding.
  • Address common breastfeeding challenges and manage breast pump distribution.
  • Refer prenatal and postpartum clients to peer counselors and other breastfeeding support resources.
  • Assist Certified Peer Advocates in planning and evaluating participant-centered nutrition education.
  • Develop, conduct, and assess nutrition training for local agency staff on relevant topics.
  • Orient, train, and mentor new nutrition support staff.
  • Oversee the duties of a Nutrition Assistant to enhance service delivery to participants.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned within the scope of expertise and responsibility.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Familiarity with nutrition education and county health resources for special populations.
  • Strong critical thinking skills with an understanding of fiscal and nutritional risks associated with food package over-issuance.
  • Ability to assess nutritional needs beyond standard food packages and make necessary adjustments.
  • Proficiency in participant-centered nutrition counseling to encourage behavioral change.
  • Exhibit professionalism, good judgment, flexibility, courtesy, and integrity.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Maintain client confidentiality diligently.
  • Motivated with the ability to relate to clients in a caring manner and work collaboratively.
  • Commitment to attending trainings and obtaining 24 hours of continuing education every three years in relevant WIC topics.
  • Possess a valid driver's license with a good driving record and access to a reliable vehicle for travel.
  • Ability to perform tasks such as keyboarding and lifting 25 – 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy, with the ability to work effectively in a high-pressure environment.
  • Flexibility to work hours that meet program and participant needs, including some evenings and weekends.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Registered Nutrition and Dietetics Technician (NDTR/DTR); or
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant health-related field with at least six credit hours in nutrition; or
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor's degree.
Full-Time Position: 37.5 hours per week

Level 4

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, with rotating Saturdays as per clinic schedule.
