Certified Hospice Caregiver

The hospice aide serves as a vital member of the interdisciplinary team, operating under the guidance of a registered nurse to deliver essential services tailored to meet the personal needs of patients and enhance their comfort.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of the hospice aide encompass, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Attending to personal care needs based on patient assignments and responding promptly to requests. If a task cannot be performed, immediate notification to the Case Manager is required.
2. Ensuring patient safety and utilizing equipment correctly (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen equipment).
3. Providing personal care, including bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, shampooing, and changing bed linens as needed.
4. Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as required.
5. Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping, as assigned.
6. Aiding in feeding patients as directed.
7. Monitoring and caring for the patient's skin to prevent tissue breakdown.
8. Reporting significant changes in the patient's condition to the Case Manager and being aware of interpersonal dynamics involving caregivers or others in the patient's environment.
9. Supporting ambulation and exercise as instructed by the hospice nurse or therapist.
10. Assisting with bedpans and urinals, and providing help with light laundry tasks as assigned.
11. Performing range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as part of therapy services, ensuring competency in skills.
12. Maintaining a clean and orderly living space for the patient, as assigned.
13. Adhering to the organization's standards for documentation and care procedures, as well as maintaining professional conduct.
14. Participating in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives.
15. Demonstrating respect for the patient and their family/caregiver environment, as well as the personal needs of the patient.
It is important to note that the hospice aide does not engage in activities classified as nursing practice according to the Nurse Practice Act.
Specifically, the hospice aide is not authorized to administer medications, take physician orders, or perform procedures that require the expertise of a licensed nurse, such as sterile techniques.

QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
1. Completion of training requirements as mandated by the State.
2. Minimum age of 18 years.
3. Ability to read and follow written instructions, as well as document care provided.
4. Understanding of hospice philosophy and comfort in providing specialized care to terminally ill patients.
5. Positive references from previous employers.
6. Self-directed with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Comfortable with issues surrounding death and dying, and able to maintain a calm demeanor in a patient's home.
7. Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired individuals.
8. Current CPR certification is required.
9. Demonstrates patience, tact, and good personal hygiene.
10. Valid driver's license with an insured vehicle that meets organizational requirements and is in good working condition.
11. Strong oral and written communication skills.
12. Good organizational abilities.
COMPENSATION:
$26.00 per hour
