The hospice aide serves as a vital member of the interdisciplinary team, working under the guidance of a registered nurse to provide essential services that cater to the personal needs of patients, ensuring their comfort and dignity.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of the hospice aide encompass, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Delivering personal care as per the assigned patient, responding promptly to their requests. If a task cannot be performed, it is imperative to notify the Case Manager immediately.
2. Ensuring the safety of the patient by utilizing equipment correctly (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen).
3. Providing personal care, including bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, shampooing, and changing bed linens as required.
4. Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as directed.
5. Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping, as assigned.
6. Aiding in feeding the patient as needed.
7. Observing and caring for the patient's skin to prevent tissue breakdown over bony areas.
8. Reporting any changes in the patient's condition to the Case Manager, while also being mindful of the dynamics involving caregivers or other individuals in the patient's environment.
9. Supporting ambulation and exercise as instructed by the hospice nurse or therapist.
10. Assisting with bedpans and urinals, and providing help with light laundry tasks as assigned.
11. Carrying out range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as part of therapeutic services, ensuring skills competency is demonstrated.
13. Maintaining a clean and organized living space for the patient, as directed.
14. Adhering to the organization's standards for documentation and care procedures, along with professional conduct.
15. Participating in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives.
16. Showing respect for the patient and their family, while being attentive to the patient's personal needs.
It is important to note that the hospice aide does not engage in activities classified as nursing practice according to the Nurse Practice Act.
Specifically, the hospice aide is not authorized to administer medications, accept physician's orders, or perform procedures that require the expertise of a licensed nurse, such as sterile techniques.
The above duties represent a summary of the primary responsibilities expected of the hospice aide. Additional job-related tasks may be assigned as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)
1. Completion of training requirements as mandated by the State.
2. Minimum age of 18 years.
3. Ability to read, comprehend, and follow written instructions, along with documenting care provided.
4. Understanding of hospice philosophy and comfort in providing specialized care to terminally ill patients.
5. Positive references from previous employers.
6. Self-motivated with the capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
7. Comfort with issues surrounding death and dying, providing a calm presence in the patient's home.
8. Empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired individuals.
9. Current CPR certification is required.
10. Demonstrated tact, patience, and good personal hygiene.
11. Valid driver's license with an insured vehicle that meets organizational standards and is in good working condition.
12. Strong oral and written communication skills.
13. Effective organizational abilities.
COMPENSATION:
$26.00 per hour
