JOB SUMMARY
The hospice aide serves as a vital member of the interdisciplinary team, working under the guidance of a registered nurse to provide essential services tailored to meet the personal needs of patients and enhance their comfort.

The hospice aide is tasked with monitoring the patient's condition, reporting observations, and documenting care provided. Assignments are structured to ensure quality, continuity, and safety in patient care.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of the hospice aide encompass, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Addressing personal care needs based on patient assignments and responding promptly to requests. If unable to perform a specific task, immediate communication with the Case Manager is required.
  • Ensuring patient safety and utilizing equipment correctly (e.g., foot stools, side rails, oxygen equipment).
  • Providing personal care services, including bathing, back rubs, oral hygiene, shampooing, and changing bed linens as scheduled.
  • Assisting patients with dressing and undressing as directed.
  • Planning and preparing nutritious meals, including grocery shopping, as assigned.
  • Assisting with feeding patients as necessary.
  • Monitoring and caring for the patient's skin to prevent tissue breakdown.
  • Reporting significant changes in the patient's condition to the Case Manager, while being aware of the dynamics involving caregivers and family members.
  • Supporting patient mobility and exercise as instructed by the hospice nurse or therapist.
  • Providing assistance with bedpans and urinals, along with light laundry tasks as assigned.
  • Performing range of motion exercises and other simple procedures as part of therapy services, ensuring competency in skills.
  • Offering respite for patients and their families when present on-site, as appropriate.
  • Maintaining a clean and orderly living environment for the patient as directed.
  • Adhering to the organization's documentation standards and maintaining professional conduct.
  • Participating in quality assessment and performance improvement initiatives.
  • Respecting the personal needs and environment of patients and their families.

IMPORTANT NOTES
The hospice aide will not engage in activities considered nursing practices as defined by the Nurse Practice Act, including administering medications or performing procedures requiring licensed nursing skills.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Fulfill the training requirements mandated by the State.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess the ability to read and follow written instructions and document care provided.
  • Understand hospice philosophy and be comfortable delivering specialized care to terminally ill patients.
  • Provide satisfactory references from previous employers.
  • Demonstrate self-direction and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Exhibit empathy for the needs of the ill, injured, frail, and impaired.
  • Maintain current CPR certification.
  • Show tact, patience, and uphold good personal hygiene.
  • Possess a valid driver's license and maintain an insured vehicle in good working condition.

Good communication skills and organizational abilities are essential.

Salary: $26.00 per hour
