In addition to the base salary, this position is eligible for 5% premium pay for positions located in King County.

Are you passionate about outdoor work? The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is in search of an Aquatic Habitat Survey Specialist who is eager to hike, raft, and collect vital data on salmon and steelhead populations.

Contribute to the conservation of the Stillaguamish and Snohomish Watersheds by documenting spawning ground survey data, gathering biological samples, and playing a pivotal role in fish conservation initiatives.

Key Responsibilities:

Conduct Aquatic Surveys:

Collect and record data on salmon and steelhead spawning and stream conditions from various water bodies, either on foot or utilizing rafts/boats.

Identify and enumerate live and deceased salmon by species.
Identify, count, mark, and waypoint salmon redds by species.

Biological Sampling:
Gather and document biological samples from salmon and steelhead throughout the watershed.

This may involve DNA collection, otolith and scale sampling for age assessment, and sampling for marks and tags to ascertain hatchery or natural spawner origins.


Data Management:
Input survey data, biological sampling information, and redd location data into the state database (FTS).
Ensure accurate data entry into computer software systems.

Trail Access and Equipment Maintenance:

Assist in the upkeep and preparation of access trails and vehicle staging areas, utilizing hand tools to manage vegetation.

Engage with survey index landowners and update their contact details.
Maintain and service equipment including trucks, boats, trailers, rafts, exposure gear, field sampling kits, scanners/detectors, and GPS units.

Snorkeling Duties:
Snorkel in rivers as required to identify, count, and/or collect fish, and/or deploy and inspect field gear.

Working Conditions:
Fieldwork primarily occurs in rivers and streams. Candidates should be prepared to walk/hike up to 10 miles in rugged terrain, navigating water and varying environmental conditions. Float in rafts/boats under variable flow conditions and weather. Snorkel in cold, fast-flowing/whitewater conditions. Must be capable of negotiating water in emergency situations and safely operating a raft/pontoon boat in challenging conditions.

Schedule:
Eight (8) hours per day, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend hours.

Tools and Equipment:

Vehicles (trucks, boats), personal flotation devices (PFD), exposure apparel (waders/boots, raincoat, gloves), backpacks, pike staff, and sampling instruments.


Customer Interactions:
Communicate with private landowners and the public.

Qualifications:
Required
Qualifications:

Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.

OR

Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.


Note:

College coursework in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely related fields may substitute for experience, provided the coursework includes at least six (6) semester or nine (9) quarter hours of natural science classes.

Professional and volunteer experience in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural resources, engineering, or related fields may also substitute for experience.


Certifications/Licenses:
Valid driver's license.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
Completion of WDFW snorkel training and certification within six (6) months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
In addition to the required qualifications, ideal candidates will possess some or all of the following:
Salmon identification skills.

Safe watercraft handling skills and the ability to operate vessels safely in various weather and stream flow conditions.

Knowledge of the watersheds of Snohomish County.
WDFW snorkel training and certification.
