As part of the State of Washington's commitment to fish conservation, we are seeking an Aquatic Habitat Survey Specialist who is enthusiastic about working in natural environments. This role involves extensive outdoor activities, including hiking and rafting, to collect vital data on salmon and steelhead populations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct Surveys: Perform spawning ground and stream surveys to gather and document data on salmon and steelhead spawning activities in various aquatic environments.
  • Species Identification: Accurately identify and count both live and deceased salmon by species.
  • Data Collection: Collect biological samples from fish populations, which may include DNA, otolith, and scale samples for age determination.
  • Data Management: Enter and manage survey data, ensuring accuracy in the state database.
  • Trail Maintenance: Assist in the upkeep of access trails and staging areas, ensuring safe passage for survey activities.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain and service various equipment, including vehicles and field sampling kits.
  • Snorkeling: Engage in snorkeling activities as required to gather data or inspect equipment.

Working Conditions: This position requires fieldwork in rivers and streams, often in rugged terrain and varying weather conditions. Candidates should be prepared for physical demands, including hiking long distances and operating watercraft safely.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED with one year of high school science and two years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in biological, chemical, or zoological fields is advantageous.
  • Valid driver's license is required.

Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of salmon species identification.
  • Experience in safe watercraft operation in diverse conditions.
  • Familiarity with local watersheds.
