Your Role

As a key member of our Kansas City, KS team, you will leverage your knowledge in the natural sciences to conduct bat surveys and analyses that support a variety of environmental initiatives. This role offers a blend of fieldwork and office responsibilities across the Great Plains Region and potentially beyond.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct and analyze data from bat mist-netting surveys and habitat assessments, integrating findings into comprehensive reports.
  • Assist in fieldwork and data collection as necessary.
  • Prepare, research, and edit technical documents, including bat survey reports and habitat conservation plans.
  • Lead mist-netting surveys for protected bat species.
  • Perform vegetation inventories relevant to bat survey sites.
  • Conduct aquatic assessments associated with bat survey locations.
  • Review background data and submit environmental permit applications.
  • Support GPS data collection and mapping efforts.
  • Utilize ArcGIS for mapping and data collection.
  • Organize, manage, and analyze collected data effectively.
  • Assist in preparing reports, tables, and maps for client and regulatory review.
  • Travel up to 50% of the time for fieldwork and project needs.

Qualifications

Essential Skills and Experience
  • Possession of a USFWS Collecting Permit for listed bat species is mandatory.
  • A strong interest in ecosystems and natural resource conservation is crucial.
  • Ability to approach problems with critical thinking and prioritize safety.
  • Familiarity with HSSE policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of field sampling methodologies.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt during fieldwork.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to foster professional relationships within the team.
  • A valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
  • Readiness to travel and work in remote areas, including overnight stays.
  • Fieldwork may involve exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Proficient technical writing and communication skills, including advanced MS Office capabilities.
  • Excellent note-taking and documentation skills.
  • A positive attitude in diverse working environments.

Education and Experience

Required:
  • Bachelor's Degree in an environmental discipline (e.g., biology, natural resources).
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting biological surveys in the region.
  • Experience with bat radio telemetry and roost emergence.
  • Comfortable using ArcGIS and GPS survey tools.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Preferred:
  • Master's degree in biology or a related field.
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis methods.
