Department Overview

The Gas Operations team is dedicated to maintaining the safe and dependable delivery of natural gas to our clients. This department oversees all facets of gas Transmission and Distribution operations, which encompass planning, engineering, maintenance, construction, restoration, and emergency response.

Position Summary

The Gas System Operator functions as a shift employee, assisting and working under the direct supervision of a qualified Gas System Operator. This role involves remotely managing (via computer) and manually overseeing the high-pressure natural gas transmission pipeline while effectively communicating the system's status.

The Provisional Journeyman – Transmission Gas System Operator is expected to complete training successfully to achieve qualification as a Journeyman Operator. Compliance with PHMSA Control Room Management Regulation, 49 CFR, is mandatory. The operator will monitor the gas Transmission system, act as a safety advocate, possess strong analytical skills, and be trained to identify an Abnormal Operating Condition (AOC). This includes analyzing pressure trends and coordinating with field personnel as necessary. Recognizing both audible and visual alarms is essential for this position. The Gas Control team monitors the entire service area, managing numerous emergencies daily and receiving extensive training in emergency response protocols. The work environment is a technologically advanced control room recognized across the industry.

This position is subject to review and approval by the Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) at the time of hiring. Provisional hires must engage in targeted training to attain journey-level expertise in their roles and responsibilities.

Compensation

The hourly rate for this position is $65.41, reflecting the company's good faith estimate at the time of posting. This rate is influenced by various factors, including specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.

Responsibilities

  • Responds appropriately in emergency situations, including coordinating emergency personnel callouts.
  • Generates and compiles reports utilizing computer systems and software.
  • Manages all base radio communications, telephone, and PC logging activities, taking necessary actions when required, including emergency personnel callouts.
  • Monitors and processes data related to gas operations, including gas quality and SCADA systems.
  • Oversees maintenance activities concerning gas routing based on both routine and non-routine job clearances.
  • Updates logs as mandated by company standards to ensure compliance with CPUC regulations.
  • Ensures the safety, security, and continuity of service for transmission and distribution systems and facilities.
  • Assists in training new and existing operators.
  • Engages in DOT-Operations/Maintenance and Emergency procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience is required.
  • A valid California Driver's License is necessary.
  • Ability to work a rotating 12-hour shift schedule.
  • Willingness to work in remote locations.
  • Must pass federally mandated random drug and alcohol testing.
  • If hired provisionally, successful completion of the training plan within the agreed timeline is required.
  • Due to the 12-hour shifts, candidates should reside within a commutable distance of less than 90 minutes from the headquarters to comply with federal regulations.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and/or overtime (scheduled or ad hoc) is essential.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with PG&E or Hiring Hall is preferred.
  • Background in gas operations or related fields is advantageous.
  • Graduates from the Power Pathway program or endorsed programs are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with data entry on computer systems is beneficial.
  • Strong communication skills via radio and phone are essential.
  • Ability to comprehend and apply technical concepts and procedures effectively.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks under pressure successfully.
  • Preference will be given to applicants residing within 50 miles of the headquarters location to better represent the communities served.
