Department Overview

The Gas Operations department is dedicated to ensuring the secure and dependable delivery of natural gas to our clientele. This unit oversees all facets of gas Transmission and Distribution operations, which encompass planning, engineering, maintenance, construction, restoration, and emergency response.

Position Summary

The Gas System Operator is a shift-based role responsible for assisting and working under the direct supervision of a qualified Gas System Operator. This position entails remotely controlling and manually monitoring high-pressure natural gas transmission pipelines, while effectively communicating the system's status.

The Provisional Journeyman – Transmission Gas System Operator is expected to complete the necessary training to achieve qualification as a Journeyman Operator. Compliance with PHMSA Control Room Management Regulation is mandatory. The role involves monitoring the gas Transmission system, acting as a safety advocate, possessing strong analytical skills, and being trained to identify Abnormal Operating Conditions (AOCs). The operator must analyze pressure trends and initiate field callouts as required. Recognizing both audible and visual alarms is essential. The Gas Control team monitors the entire service area, managing numerous emergencies daily and undergoing extensive emergency response training. The work environment includes a technologically advanced control room recognized throughout the industry.

This position is subject to review and approval by the Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) at the time of hiring. Provisional hires will engage in targeted training to develop journey-level expertise in their roles and responsibilities.

Compensation Information

The hourly rate for this position is $65.41, reflective of the locality and subject to collective bargaining agreements. This rate is influenced by various factors, including skills, education, certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

Responsibilities

  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations, including personnel callouts.
  • Generates and compiles reports utilizing computer systems and software.
  • Manages base radio communications, telephone, and PC logging activities, taking necessary actions during emergencies.
  • Monitors and processes data related to gas operations, including gas quality and SCADA systems.
  • Oversees maintenance activities concerning gas routing based on various job clearances.
  • Updates logs as mandated by company standards to ensure compliance with CPUC regulations.
  • Ensures the safety, security, and continuity of service for transmission and distribution systems and facilities.
  • Assists in training new and existing operators.
  • Handles operations and maintenance tasks as well as emergency situations.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High School diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience is required.
  • A valid California Driver's License is necessary.
  • Ability to work a rotating 12-hour shift schedule.
  • Willingness to work in remote locations.
  • Must pass federally mandated random drug and alcohol testing.
  • If hired provisionally, must complete the training plan within the agreed timeline.
  • Due to shift requirements, candidates should reside within a commutable distance of less than 90 minutes from the headquarters.
  • Flexibility to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and/or overtime is essential.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with PG&E or related hiring hall is preferred.
  • Background in gas operations or related fields is advantageous.
  • Graduates from the Power Pathway program or endorsed programs are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience with data entry on computer systems is beneficial.
  • Effective communication skills via radio and phone are necessary.
  • Strong understanding and application of technical concepts and procedures.
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently under pressure.
  • Preference will be given to applicants residing within 50 miles of the headquarters to better represent the communities served.
