Department Overview

The Electric Engineering division is dedicated to ensuring the provision of safe and dependable electric services to our clientele. This department oversees all facets of electric distribution and transmission operations, encompassing planning, system protection engineering, maintenance, construction, asset management, business planning, restoration, and emergency response.

System Protection Engineering Responsibilities:

  • Support for projects and maintenance operations, specifying design, requirements, and testing protocols.
  • Analysis and review of power system disturbances and operational activities.
  • Technical consultation and training regarding System Operation and Planning matters.
  • Evaluation, approval, and development of equipment standards.

Position Summary

This role is represented by Engineers and Scientists of California (ESC) and is subject to collective bargaining agreements.

As an entry-level Junior Protection Systems Engineer, you will assist in projects, conduct protection studies, and perform protection-related tasks for distribution voltages up to 21kV under the guidance of a more experienced Protection Engineer or Supervisor.

This position involves comprehensive training in all relevant job functions and necessitates a high degree of oversight and review of work. Responsibilities include providing technical protection engineering for routine projects and maintenance operations, which may involve issuing protection requirements, setting relay configurations, processing clearances, and investigating relay operations.

Focus will be on mastering power system modeling, databases, distribution transformer and line protection, and relay coordination.

This hybrid position allows for work from a remote office and the assigned work location as needed. The primary work location is currently not specified.

Compensation Information

The salary range provided reflects the company's good faith estimate for this position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be influenced by various factors, including specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.

Annual Salary Range:

Minimum: $91,728

Maximum: $144,672

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver protection engineering support for projects and studies, which may include:
  • Issuing protection requirements and detailing operations for non-standard schemes.
  • Conducting short circuit studies and calculating line impedance.
  • Determining and issuing relay settings.
  • Supporting relay system installations, including reviewing test programs and conducting various checks.
  • Performing area coordination studies.
  • Participating in project meetings and walkdowns.
  • Reviewing construction drawings.
  • Maintaining records, including databases and job files.
  • Generating and approving new tools and training prior to implementation.
  • Identifying existing protection deficiencies.
  • Providing normal and emergency maintenance and operation support, which may involve:
  • Investigating relay operations and implementing corrective measures.
  • Processing clearance requests and establishing specific protection setups.
  • Assisting technicians and operators with routine maintenance and operational tasks.
  • Specific Duties for Distribution Group:
  • Supporting distribution planning engineers with maintenance and operations.
  • Participating in distribution protection training and audits.
  • Reviewing distributed generation interconnection requests.

To fulfill the various aspects of these responsibilities, the candidate will collaborate with internal engineering, operations, and maintenance teams. Attendance at meetings representing the group may be required, with external contacts limited to straightforward issues.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field from an accredited institution.

Desired:

  • Active California EIT Certificate.
  • Two years of engineering experience.
  • Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles and theories.
  • Basic understanding of symmetrical component theory and capability to perform fault calculations.
  • Familiarity with logic gate theory and control circuitry.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting operating, single line, SLM&R, and schematic diagrams.
  • Capacity to quickly grasp protection concepts and their applications.
