Position Overview


At Stony Brook Medicine, a Cardiac Monitoring Specialist plays a crucial role within our healthcare team, responsible for overseeing the telemetry of all assigned patients.

The Cardiac Monitoring Specialist inputs patient information into the telemonitoring system, documenting cardiac rhythms and promptly communicating any deviations from the patient's established baseline rhythm to nursing staff and physicians.

This role involves discussing the patient's cardiac status and the importance of telemetry monitoring with registered nurses and medical doctors during patient handoffs.

The Cardiac Monitoring Specialist ensures that all monitoring devices are functioning properly and collaborates with the biomedical department for maintenance and repairs.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Continuously observe cardiac monitoring tracings for all patients utilizing telemetry and computerized monitoring systems.
  • Accurately describe ECG rhythm characteristics and document findings in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate correct lead placement and skin preparation to obtain clear, interpretable six-second ECG strips.
  • Provide rhythm strips to registered nurses for analysis and ensure timely initial rate/rhythm interpretation upon patient admission to a monitored unit.
  • Maintain a comprehensive monitor log that includes rhythm interpretations and any necessary parameter adjustments.
  • Relay pertinent information to the incoming technician, including significant rate/rhythm changes and any concerns regarding monitored patients.
  • Communicate any notable rate/rhythm changes to the registered nurse and charge nurse without delay.
  • Ensure optimal operation of all monitoring equipment and adhere to infection control standards when cleaning devices.
  • Keep an updated inventory of monitoring supplies and equipment.
  • Collaborate with Biomedical Engineering for necessary repairs and upkeep of monitoring devices.
  • Ensure that adequate monitoring supplies are consistently available.


Qualifications

Required:
High school diploma or GED. EMS certification (EMT-Basic or Paramedic) or telemetry certification is required. Verification of all required certifications/licenses must be submitted with the application.

Preferred:
RN or LPN license. A minimum of one year of experience in EMS or as a Monitor Technician, along with clinical healthcare experience, is preferred.

Work Environment:
This position may require flexibility in shift scheduling and may involve essential duties during institutional emergencies.
