Position Overview

Key Responsibilities of an Advanced Clinical Laboratory Specialist in the Stem Cell Department may include:
  • Facilitating the processing of hematopoietic stem cells derived from bone marrow, blood, and cord blood.
  • Conducting laboratory tests and aiding in the execution of departmental quality assurance programs.
  • Reviewing and reporting final test outcomes, ensuring accuracy of computer-generated printouts where applicable. This necessitates a comprehensive understanding of physiological conditions that may influence test results and variations.
  • Assisting across various hospital departments in interfacing with the patient care computer system for order entry and results evaluation.
  • Participating in specialized training for all routine preventive maintenance protocols for laboratory equipment.
  • Contributing to data collection for various assays to validate results in accordance with FACT standards.
  • Maintaining a solid understanding of safe laboratory practices as endorsed by the NYS Department of Health and OSHA, and conducting oneself in a manner that ensures the safety of all personnel.
  • Reviewing, learning, and comprehending all relevant operational standards and regulations, and assisting in their implementation.
  • While assigned to a specific shift, must be adaptable to participate in departmental functions beyond standard hours.
  • Performing additional related duties as required or directed.
  • Assisting in the processing of bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cells for cryopreservation.
  • Assisting in the processing of bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cells for infusion.
  • Monitoring environmental controls and maintaining logs within the stem cell laboratory.
  • Executing critical calculations and analyses of stem cell components, reporting results on appropriate documentation.
  • Evaluating adverse events and deviations that necessitate prompt management support and judgment, ensuring timely reporting to the medical director or designated representative.
  • Compiling QA/QC data on stem cell products as instructed by supervisors to comply with Joint Commission and other regulatory requirements.
  • Being on-call, which includes responding to any notifications during the laboratory's off hours, such as equipment alarms and courier services for incoming or outgoing products.
Qualifications

Required: Clinical Laboratory Technologist New York State license, Bachelor’s degree in clinical sciences/biotechnology with a minimum of three years of experience in blood banking, immunology, hematology, and microbiology. ASCP certification is essential.

Preferred: Experience in stem cell processing, manipulation, and cryopreservation. Familiarity with quality control and regulatory standards is advantageous.
