Inpatient Neurostroke Physician Assistant

Position Overview

The Department of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is a prominent institution recognized for its excellence in the comprehensive treatment of neurological disorders.

Our dynamic department consists of over 75 dedicated faculty members across 12 specialized sections, offering a wide array of advanced and innovative strategies for neurological care, alongside a diverse range of groundbreaking research initiatives and extensive educational opportunities for trainees.

We provide access to cutting-edge treatments in one of the most rapidly evolving fields of medicine, featuring an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center and a Level-4 NEAC Epilepsy Center.

In collaboration with the O'Donnell Brain Institute, our department is developing state-of-the-art facilities for drug and device testing, fostering a collaborative environment for current and new faculty to engage in research on therapies for brain diseases.


Qualifications

EDUCATION
A Master's degree or higher from an Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician (ARC-PA) accredited Physician Assistant program.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION
Certification from the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) is mandatory.
Licensed by the Texas Physician Assistant Board. Current American Heart Association Life Support certification(s) as per institutional policy for Advanced Practice Providers.

Experience in working with residents and/or fellows is highly preferred. Background in critical care or neurology is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities
________________________________________

  • Conduct and document thorough initial and ongoing physical assessments tailored to age and diagnosis, including psychological evaluations.
  • Analyze data and apply evidence-based practices to formulate, implement, and assess the patient care plan, including ordering and interpreting laboratory, radiology, and other diagnostic tests/results.
  • Exhibit proficiency in technical and procedural skills relevant to the specialty and training.
  • Provide essential management, referrals, counseling, and education to patients, families, and caregivers regarding current treatment and preventive health strategies.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives through organized group processes, workshops, seminars, and staff meetings to enhance clinical and systemic performance.
  • Collaborate on research projects and protocols, consistently applying evidence-based best practices to patient care.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

  • Proficient in utilizing Electronic Medical Records (EMR) in patient care delivery.

Working Environment

  • Work primarily occurs in a clinical setting, with potential exposure to body fluids and infectious diseases.
  • Any qualifications considered as equivalents to stated minimums require prior approval from the Vice President for Human Resources Administration or their designee.
