JOB OVERVIEW

The Oncology Physician Assistant is a certified healthcare professional who provides direct patient care and has the authority to prescribe medications. This role is recognized as an independent billing provider by Medicare and Medicaid and operates under the supervision of a licensed physician. The Advanced Practice Provider delivers medical services in a specialized clinic, focusing on Oncology.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Conducts thorough assessments of patients' physical and mental health through comprehensive examinations and medical histories.

- Orders and interprets diagnostic tests to evaluate patient health and identify care needs.

- Prescribes and manages medical therapies, ensuring adherence to established protocols while considering efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Provides recommendations for lifestyle modifications to mitigate health risks.

- Develops and executes patient-centered treatment plans based on assessments, evidence-based practices, and collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary teams.

- Offers guidance to patients and their families on medical procedures, health management, medication, nutrition, and wellness strategies. Informs patients about potential side effects and interactions of prescribed medications.

- Maintains detailed documentation of patient treatment plans and outcomes. Refers patients to specialists when necessary.

- Provides specialized consultation services for conditions related to the provider's area of expertise.

- Manages patient care in various healthcare settings beyond the primary clinic, including inpatient and emergency services.

- Performs specific invasive procedures as permitted by the supervising physician.

- May be required to extend patient care responsibilities based on departmental needs.

KEY COMPETENCIES

- Proficient knowledge of medical practices for diagnosing and treating injuries and illnesses, including understanding treatment options and preventive measures.

- Familiarity with diagnostic and rehabilitation methods for physical and mental health conditions.

- Strong verbal and written communication skills.

- Excellent interpersonal abilities.

- Capable of critical thinking and solving complex problems.

- Proficient in using computer systems and relevant software.

- Ability to create and implement effective treatment plans.

- Skilled in counseling patients regarding medical and psychological conditions and treatment strategies.

- Competent in interpreting laboratory and diagnostic test results.

- Valid license to practice as a Physician Assistant in Texas.

- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 30 days of employment.

- Current certification from the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Graduation from an accredited Physician Assistant program.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Less than one year of relevant experience.

CERTIFICATION/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Must hold a valid Physician Assistant license in Texas.
