Environmental Health & Safety Officer

OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Director of Environmental Health & Safety, the Environmental Health & Safety Officer is responsible for fostering a culture of safety throughout the campus while ensuring adherence to various environmental health and safety regulations relevant to the institution. Key responsibilities encompass laboratory safety, hazardous materials management, occupational safety, environmental initiatives, and industrial hygiene. The ideal candidate will possess the capability to design and effectively contribute to proactive EHS programs and collaborate with other professionals across the institution.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Laboratory Safety Oversight: Conduct regular inspections within laboratories to verify compliance with OSHA Laboratory Standards and other research safety protocols (biosafety, radiation safety, animal safety).
  • Indoor Air Quality and Industrial Hygiene: Execute surveys in these domains, analyze findings, and collaborate with stakeholders to address identified risks.
  • Occupational Safety Monitoring: Inspect operational areas to ensure compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space regulations, personal protective equipment (PPE), etc. Work with stakeholders to rectify any issues discovered.
  • Environmental and Hazardous Materials Oversight: Assist in managing regulated hazardous materials and waste, supporting Facilities in maintaining compliance with EPA regulations.
  • Training Development: Create and deliver training sessions for diverse groups across the campus using both in-person and online platforms.
  • Additional Duties: Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and exercise sound judgment.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to evolving responsibilities.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other relevant regulations.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, and capable of learning specialized software utilized by the department.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain collaborative working relationships both internally and externally.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with diverse constituencies.
  • Competence in preparing clear, concise, and accurate reports, policies, and other documentation.
  • Experience in developing and conducting training programs.
  • Required: Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record for a minimum of three years.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in a scientific or engineering discipline.
  • At least five (5) years of relevant experience in safety, industrial hygiene, or a closely related field.
  • Preferred professional designation.
  • Experience in higher education settings is advantageous.
WORK SCHEDULE:
  • Full-time, exempt position.
  • Standard hours are Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hours per day; 38.75 hours per week; flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.
SALARY RANGE:

Pay Grade 8 (Salary range $64,210.00 to $85,072.00 annually)
