Process Optimization Manager

Amalgamated Sugar Company is in search of a Process Optimization Manager to collaborate with Plant Management in refining processes to attain maximum recovery while minimizing costs. This role is pivotal in delivering technical support and guiding a team dedicated to enhancing factory processes. The Process Optimization Manager will also lead factory personnel in the domains of safety, quality assurance, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence.

This position involves assisting in the formulation, administration, and communication of the Company's Production Plan, Syrup Movement Plan, and Granulated Sugar Plan. The Process Optimization Manager will oversee factory production and operations in alignment with Operating Instructions and company policies. Utilizing a team of process and control engineers, this role will focus on extracting value at all levels, including identifying prospective projects aimed at optimizing overall production.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Guide and direct engineering initiatives centered on continuous improvement.
  2. Collaborate with the training department to ensure training materials are current and emphasize optimization techniques, tools, and guidelines.
  3. Oversee and conduct factory Process Hazard Assessments (PHAs).
  4. Provide leadership to Process Engineers to maximize throughput and extraction while minimizing operational costs across all value streams.
  5. Deliver technical training support to factory and engineering staff.
  6. Develop and manage continuous improvement (CI) projects throughout the factory.
  7. Work closely with Operating and Maintenance Departments to plan, develop, and engineer new improvement initiatives.
  8. Offer operational expertise and support to project engineers on new projects, including the creation of PFDs, P&IDs, and control narratives.
  9. Ensure all value stream products comply with relevant safety and quality standards.
  10. Assist in optimizing chemical additions to processes, trialing for cost efficiency, and presenting new process aids for evaluation.
  11. Engage the team in developing and implementing advanced control strategies and equipment for process optimization.
  12. Champion cross-factory technical learning and best practices to advance the company’s objectives.
  13. Manage subordinate engineering staff's daily performance.
  14. Provide mentorship and guidance to engineering staff regarding professional growth and career pathways.
  15. Maintain process area glide-paths and periodic KPI reports for distribution to relevant teams.
  16. Develop and maintain up-to-date process optimization models for the factory.
  17. Formulate strategies and analyses for clean-in-place (CIP) chemical applications across all facility equipment.
  18. Collaborate with reliability and maintenance engineering teams to enhance equipment uptime and overall plant reliability.
  19. Conduct specialized testing and analysis on unit operations to evaluate process efficiencies and identify improvement opportunities.
  20. Address issues with external agencies in the absence of management.
  21. Supervise, motivate, and evaluate the performance of assigned employees.
  22. Support Maintenance and Repair teams as required.
  23. Deliver technical presentations at various management levels and industry-related conferences as necessary.
  24. Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or a related engineering discipline is required. Candidates should possess 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience, particularly in process optimization and control, with a preference for backgrounds in the food industry. Experience in petrochemical, pulp and paper, or chemical manufacturing sectors is also relevant.

Proficiency in process modeling programs and process data historian expertise is essential. Equivalent combinations of experience and training that provide the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities will also be considered. Bilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.
