Nuclear Fuel Engineer Job Description

Holtec International, a global leader in nuclear energy solutions, is seeking a highly skilled Nuclear Fuel Engineer to join its team. As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you will play a critical role in designing and developing the next generation of nuclear power plants.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide technical expertise in nuclear fuels engineering analysis, activities, and programs.
  • Develop and implement technical oversight and collaboration activities with fuel vendors to ensure fuel and core component in-reactor design requirements align with SMR-160 licensing activities.
  • Design, modeling, and analysis of the nuclear core and fuel system using engineering computer codes, empirical methods, and first principle methods.
  • Perform calculations to support safe plant operation by confirming fuel rod thermo-mechanical properties align with SAFDLs and provide initial fuel rod conditions as input to downstream safety analyses.
  • Prepare reports and licensing documentation.
  • Participate in meetings with clients, collaborators, and the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
Requirements:
  • BS in Nuclear Engineering (Mechanical, Materials, or closely related field) from an accredited college or university.
  • 3-5 years of demonstrated experience in the nuclear industry or similarly applicable fields.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of PC applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • General knowledge of nuclear fuels and power plant operations/physics.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with nuclear fuel performance or structural analysis software.
Desired Attributes:
  • MS in nuclear engineering with emphasis on fuel mechanics and reactor physics.
  • 5+ years of experience in the nuclear industry, especially performing engineering calculations/evaluations.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in performing routine confirmatory calculations and supporting reviews and evaluations of safety and non-safety related reactor systems design, technical specifications, reactor core, fuel, and systems design, nuclear methods, or performance of operating reactors.
  • Experience preparing licensing documents for submittal to NRC and comprehensive knowledge of NUREG-0800 (NRC Standard Review Plan for LWRs) Chapter 4 and 15 requirements.
