Penn State University Park is in search of a seasoned leader in student affairs and an adept administrator to take on the role of Vice President of Student Engagement and Affairs. This position entails overseeing a diverse portfolio dedicated to enhancing student involvement and campus life. Reporting directly to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the incumbent will be an integral part of the senior leadership team within a division comprising 28 administrative units and over 500 full-time staff, alongside approximately 1,000 part-time personnel. Furthermore, Student Affairs at University Park extends its support to student affairs operations across 20 Commonwealth campuses. This senior role will champion strategic initiatives aimed at fostering intentional co-curricular experiences, promoting student readiness for global citizenship, aiding students in navigating challenges, advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB), and cultivating a supportive environment centered on student wellness.

The Vice President will exemplify collaborative leadership, engaging effectively with a wide array of students, faculty, and staff. A thorough understanding of contemporary issues and best practices in higher education is essential, along with substantial experience in student affairs and an advanced degree.

Key responsibilities include oversight of various student engagement sectors such as Career Services, Student Leadership and Involvement, Fraternity and Sorority Life (FSL), the HUB-Robeson Center, and the Parents Program. The role also encompasses shared oversight of Student Orientation and Transition Programs and the Student Engagement Network. Additional responsibilities may involve aspects such as Residence Life, advising student government or student fee boards, supporting Commonwealth Campus initiatives, facilities management, and collaborating with the Vice President on budgetary and development strategies.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Act as a senior leader within Student Affairs, providing guidance, support, and collaboration across the division and the University.
  • Deliver strategic leadership and oversight for student engagement initiatives with a focus on community, belonging, co-curricular learning, and student achievement.
  • Supervise directors of Career Services, Student Leadership and Involvement, Fraternity and Sorority Life, the HUB-Robeson Center, and the Parents Program, while also sharing oversight for Student Orientation and Transition Programs and the Student Engagement Network.
  • Represent the Vice President for Student Affairs on various university committees and working groups addressing topics such as expressive speech, emergency planning, and strategic initiatives.
  • Support human resources, budget management, and strategic planning within the units.
  • Provide guidance and structure to colleagues at Commonwealth Campuses involved in student engagement and campus life.
  • Collaborate closely with student governments, FSL governance bodies, affiliate student organizations, and other student leaders.
Qualifications:

This position may be filled at either the Vice President or Associate Vice President level, contingent upon the successful candidate's qualifications, education, and experience. A master's degree or higher, coupled with eight years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is typically required for the Vice President level. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are necessary for higher-level roles.

The ideal candidate will possess:
  • Demonstrated success in a leadership or management capacity.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of student affairs, including student success, engagement, learning, assessment, risk management, and equity.
  • A high degree of cultural competence when working with diverse populations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities.
  • Experience in engaging with student leaders and advising student organizations.
  • Expertise in strategic planning, budgeting, and financial oversight.
  • Capability to foster and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, faculty, administration, and community partners.
  • Knowledge and experience in overseeing areas such as fraternity and sorority life, student involvement, career services, and event planning.
