Position Overview

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking a talented Instrumentation and Controls Engineer to join our esteemed Automation, Instrumentation, and Controls division. This role offers a flexible 9x80 work schedule, allowing for every other Friday off, with potential hybrid work options available.

Your primary focus will be to advance INL's research and development initiatives aimed at integrating digital technologies—such as instrumentation, control systems, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics—into the commercial nuclear power industry. This effort is crucial for transitioning from traditional labor-intensive operations to a more efficient digital-centric model.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct research and development on digital technologies to tackle the modernization challenges faced by existing nuclear power facilities.
  • Lead and participate in projects, overseeing the technical strategy, execution, budgeting, and resource allocation.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, including owner-operators, vendors, and regulatory bodies, to align R&D efforts with industry needs.
  • Establish new partnerships within the industry, including drafting non-disclosure and cooperative research agreements to foster the deployment of digital technologies.
  • Present findings at scientific and industry conferences, engaging with collaborators and partners.
  • Document research outcomes through reports and publications.
  • Develop intellectual property that may lead to patents and facilitate technology transfer.
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff, post-doctoral researchers, and interns.
  • Occasional travel may be necessary to support external collaborations.
  • This position reports directly to the Department Manager.
Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Level 3: Bachelor's degree with 5 years of relevant experience; Master's degree with 2 years; or PhD with 2 years.
  • Level 4: Bachelor's degree with 9 years of relevant experience; Master's degree with 6 years; or PhD with 4 years.
  • Extensive knowledge of the technical and regulatory challenges associated with digital technologies in nuclear power.
  • Strong network and working relationships within the nuclear industry.
Compensation and Benefits:
  • Competitive salary range: Level 3 ($109,000 - $223,000) / Level 4 ($130,000 - $268,000).
