Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and creative Senior Material Research Scientist to enhance our research and development team. The ideal candidate will concentrate on the design, development, and evaluation of cutting-edge multifunctional composite materials that combine various functionalities, including structural integrity, electrical properties, thermal management, and sensing capabilities. This position necessitates close collaboration with a diverse team of engineers, material scientists, data scientists, and AI/ML researchers to propel the next wave of innovations in composite materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct the technical strategy in collaboration with government partners and mentor junior and mid-level staff.
  • Design and create advanced multifunctional composite materials with integrated properties such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, thermal management, and sensing capabilities.
  • Conduct experimental research to synthesize and characterize multifunctional composites.
  • Develop and refine fabrication techniques for multifunctional composites, utilizing additive manufacturing, hybrid processes, and innovative assembly methods.
  • Perform material characterization through techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy, mechanical testing, and thermal analysis.
  • Evaluate and characterize the behavior of multifunctional materials in application-relevant environments, including extreme conditions (temperature, chemical exposure, radiation, plasma, and hypersonic scenarios).
  • Analyze the impact of mechanical loads on functional performance.
  • Conduct experimental testing to assess tension, compression, shear properties, and interlaminar tension/shear.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including materials scientists, RF engineers, and AI/ML scientists, to integrate multifunctional composites into both new and existing components.
  • Analyze data and interpret results to inform material development and optimization.
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and publications to disseminate research findings.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline with a focus on multifunctional composites, accompanied by 8 years of relevant experience, or 6 years with a Master's degree, or 3 years with a PhD.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the research and development of multifunctional composite materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading technical projects and teams.
  • Strong understanding of composite material properties, fabrication techniques, and applications.
  • Proficiency in materials characterization methods such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, DSC, TGA, and AFM.
  • Familiarity with computational modeling and simulation tools for composite materials.
  • Experience with electromagnetic characterization techniques using lasers, microwaves, and electrical probe methods.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in the aerospace, automotive, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Knowledge of sustainable and environmentally friendly composite materials.
  • Experience in grant writing and securing funding for research initiatives.
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing and hybrid fabrication techniques.

Compensation

The compensation for this position typically ranges from $130,000 to $220,000, depending on experience, location, and other relevant factors.
