Position Summary

We are in search of a highly qualified and creative Senior Material Research Scientist to enhance our innovative team. The selected individual will spearhead the research, development, and evaluation of cutting-edge composite materials for diverse applications. This role necessitates close collaboration with cross-disciplinary teams to propel material innovation and ensure the effective integration of composite materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct the technical strategy alongside government partners and mentor junior and mid-level personnel.
  • Investigate, evaluate, and characterize the performance of advanced composite materials specifically for aerospace applications.
  • Establish frameworks and methodologies to test, characterize, and model composite behavior in pertinent environments.
  • Conduct tests on samples under extreme conditions, including high temperatures, chemical exposures in both active and inert environments, radiation, plasmas, and hypersonic scenarios.
  • Execute material characterization utilizing techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy, mechanical testing, and thermal analysis.
  • Provide both in-situ and ex-situ experimental assessments of composites, ceramics, and structural materials.
  • Conduct failure analysis employing non-destructive evaluation methods.
  • Analyze data and interpret findings to inform the development of novel materials.
  • Prepare technical documentation, presentations, and publications to convey research outcomes.
  • Collaborate with engineers, research scientists, data scientists, and AI/ML specialists to incorporate composite materials into new and existing systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, mechanical engineering, structural engineering, materials engineering, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related discipline with a focus on composite materials, along with 8 years of relevant experience, or 6 years with a Master's degree, or 3 years with a PhD.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Top Secret security clearance is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the research and development of advanced composite materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading technical projects and teams.
  • Proficiency in techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, DSC, and TGA.
  • Familiarity with computational modeling and simulation tools for composite materials, including COMSOL and ABAQUS.

Compensation

$130,000 - $220,000, reflecting the typical compensation range for this role based on experience, location, and other relevant factors.
