Position Summary

We are in search of a highly skilled and creative Senior Composite Materials Scientist to become a vital part of our research and development division. The ideal candidate will concentrate on the design, development, and analysis of cutting-edge multifunctional composite materials that incorporate various functionalities, including structural integrity, electrical properties, thermal management, and sensing capabilities. This position necessitates close collaboration with a diverse team of engineers, material scientists, data scientists, and AI/ML researchers to propel the next wave of innovations in composite materials.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct the technical strategy in collaboration with government entities and mentor junior and mid-level personnel.
  • Design and engineer advanced multifunctional composite materials with integrated characteristics such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, thermal regulation, and sensing.
  • Conduct experimental investigations to synthesize and evaluate multifunctional composites.
  • Develop and refine fabrication methods for multifunctional composites, including additive manufacturing, hybrid techniques, and innovative assembly processes.
  • Perform comprehensive material characterization using techniques such as spectroscopy, microscopy, mechanical testing, and thermal analysis.
  • Investigate and assess the behavior of multifunctional materials in application-relevant conditions, including extreme environments (temperature, chemical exposure, radiation, plasma, and hypersonic conditions).
  • Analyze data to predict the impact of mechanical loads on functional performance.
  • Conduct experimental evaluations to determine tension, compression, and shear properties, along with interlaminar tension and shear.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including materials scientists, RF engineers, and AI/ML experts, to integrate multifunctional composites into both new and existing components.
  • Analyze results and interpret data to guide material development and optimization.
  • Prepare detailed technical reports, presentations, and publications to communicate research outcomes.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in materials science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related discipline with a focus on multifunctional composites, accompanied by 8 years of relevant experience, or 6 years with a Master's degree, or 3 years with a PhD.
  • Eligibility to obtain a Top Secret security clearance.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the research and development of multifunctional composite materials.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading technical projects and teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of composite material properties, fabrication methods, and applications.
  • Expertise in materials characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, DSC, TGA, and AFM.
  • Familiarity with computational modeling and simulation tools for composite materials.
  • Knowledge of electromagnetic characterization techniques using lasers, microwaves, and electrical probe methods.

Desired:

  • Experience in the aerospace, automotive, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Understanding of sustainable and environmentally friendly composite materials.
  • Experience in grant writing and securing funding for research initiatives.
  • Familiarity with additive manufacturing and hybrid fabrication techniques.

Compensation

The typical compensation range for this position is $130,000 - $220,000, based on experience, location, and other relevant factors.
