Job Summary
As the Lead Engineer for Mission Operations, you will serve as the primary technical authority for Millennium's on-orbit spacecraft. Your responsibilities will span the entire mission lifecycle, from initial proposals to spacecraft and mission design, through integration and testing, and culminating in launch and operational phases in space. You will oversee all aspects of mission design, including the formulation of operational concepts, development of on-orbit procedures, and the innovation of advanced spacecraft operation methods tailored to each mission. The role demands composure in high-pressure scenarios, extensive knowledge of both spacecraft and ground systems, and the ability to respond to unexpected situations in real-time. You will be directly accountable for Millennium's critical assets in orbit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all phases of the mission lifecycle, from proposal modeling and design to integration, launch, and decommissioning.
  • Establish ground and mission operations requirements, ensuring alignment with spacecraft specifications.
    • Define mission operational concepts and design reference missions.
  • Architect the ground segment, including command and control systems, mission planning, and data processing infrastructure.
  • Design fault detection and autonomous systems for space vehicles, including response protocols and onboard command capabilities.
  • Develop and implement operational automation strategies to streamline daily tasks for operators.
  • Conduct simulator tests to validate mission and fault designs.
  • Execute in-factory tests to ensure compatibility of mission designs with flight hardware.
  • Perform critical ground segment testing, including radio-frequency compatibility and acceptance testing of essential ground assets.
  • Design and validate mission sequences for commissioning and operational activities.
    • Lead formal mission rehearsal events to train teams and validate mission designs.
  • Guide a team of engineers during launch and early orbit phases to commission space vehicles for operational readiness.
  • Act as the lead technical authority during mission operations for both space and ground segments.
    • Serve as the main point of contact for customers and internal leadership during critical mission phases.
  • Provide oversight for standard on-orbit operations across Millennium's fleet of spacecraft.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with real-time satellite command and control systems.
  • Proficient understanding of satellite subsystems, ground systems, space missions, and operational concepts.
  • Experience in delivering operational products to customer environments.
  • Willingness to support occasional off-hours work during critical mission operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance.
  • Master's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams, particularly in resolving unexpected scenarios.
  • Experience interfacing with external customers.
  • In-depth knowledge of satellite systems engineering, including all subsystems such as Guidance, Navigation, Control, Electrical Power, Thermal Control, and Telemetry.
  • Familiarity with Spacecraft Command & Control software systems.
  • Experience with iterative and agile development processes.
  • Knowledge of orbital dynamics and maneuver planning techniques.
  • Experience in designing fault detection and response systems, as well as vehicle autonomy.
  • Proficiency in software and scripting tools such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Java, etc.
  • Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is as follows:

  • Level 3: $104,550 - $153,750
  • Level 4: $128,350 - $188,750
