Job Summary
As the Lead Engineer for Mission Operations, you will serve as the primary technical authority for Millennium's on-orbit spacecraft. Your responsibilities will span the entire mission lifecycle, from initial proposals to spacecraft and mission design, through integration and testing, and culminating in launch and operational phases in space. You will oversee all aspects of mission design, including operational concept definitions, development of on-orbit procedures, and the innovation of advanced spacecraft operation techniques tailored to each mission. This role demands composure in high-pressure scenarios, comprehensive knowledge of both space vehicles and ground systems, and the capability to address unexpected situations in real-time. You will be directly accountable for Millennium's vital on-orbit assets.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all phases of the mission lifecycle, from proposal and mission modeling to design, integration, testing, launch, and on-orbit operations, concluding with decommissioning.
  • Establish ground and mission operations requirements, ensuring mission requirements are effectively communicated back to the spacecraft.
    • Define the mission concept of operation and design reference missions.
  • Design the ground segment, which includes command and control, mission planning, mission data processing, and the necessary infrastructure to support all operations.
  • Develop space vehicle fault management and autonomy, including fault detection and response mechanisms, autonomous vehicle behavior, and onboard command and control systems.
  • Implement operational automation strategies to minimize routine operator tasks.
  • Design and execute space vehicle simulator tests to validate mission, fault, and autonomy designs.
  • Conduct in-factory flight vehicle tests to ensure mission design compatibility with flight hardware.
  • Perform critical ground segment testing, including radio-frequency compatibility, remote facility interface testing, and acceptance testing of essential ground assets.
  • Design and validate the mission "sequence of events" for bus commissioning, payload checkout/calibration, and mission operations.
    • Plan and lead formal Mission Rehearsal events to train the mission team and validate mission design.
  • Lead a team of spacecraft and subsystem engineers during launch and early orbit activities to commission the space vehicle(s) for operational readiness.
  • Act as the lead technical authority during mission operations for both space and ground segments.
    • Serve as the focal point for customer and internal leadership during critical mission activities.
  • Provide oversight for standard on-orbit operations for Millennium's fleet of spacecraft.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with real-time satellite command and control systems.
  • Working knowledge of satellite subsystems, ground systems, space missions, and operations concept design.
  • Experience delivering operational products in customer environments.
  • Willingness to support occasional off-nominal working hours during critical mission operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Clearance.
  • Master's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams, particularly in resolving anomalous scenarios.
  • Experience interfacing with external customers.
  • In-depth knowledge of satellite systems engineering, including all subsystems such as Guidance, Navigation, and Control; Electrical Power; Thermal Control; Telemetry, Tracking, and Command; and Propulsion.
  • Experience with Spacecraft Command & Control software systems.
  • Familiarity with iterative and agile processes.
  • Knowledge of orbital dynamics, maneuver planning, and orbit determination techniques.
  • Experience designing fault detection and response systems, as well as developing space vehicle autonomy.
  • Proficiency in software and scripting tools such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Java, etc.
  • High level of organization, self-motivation, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
