Job Summary
As the Lead Engineer for Mission Operations, you will serve as the primary technical authority for Millennium's on-orbit spacecraft. Your responsibilities will span the entire mission lifecycle, from the initial proposal stage to spacecraft and mission design, through integration and testing of the space vehicle, and culminating in launch and on-orbit operations. You will oversee all aspects of mission design, including the formulation of operational concepts, development of on-orbit procedures, and the innovation of advanced spacecraft operation techniques tailored to each mission. The role demands composure in high-pressure scenarios, extensive knowledge of both space vehicles and ground systems, and the capability to address anomalous situations in real-time. You will hold direct accountability for Millennium's vital on-orbit assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all phases of the mission lifecycle, including proposal modeling, design, integration and testing, vehicle shipment, launch, on-orbit operations, and decommissioning.
- Establish ground and mission operations requirements, ensuring mission specifications are effectively communicated back to the space vehicle.
- Design the ground segment, which encompasses command and control, mission planning, mission data processing, and the necessary infrastructure to support all operational activities.
- Develop fault detection and autonomy systems for the space vehicle, including fault response mechanisms and autonomous behavior.
- Implement operational automation strategies to minimize routine operator tasks.
- Conduct space vehicle simulator tests to validate mission, fault, and autonomy designs.
- Execute in-factory flight vehicle tests to ensure compatibility with mission design and flight hardware.
- Perform critical ground segment testing, including radio-frequency compatibility and acceptance testing of essential ground assets.
- Design and validate the mission sequence of events for commissioning, payload calibration, and operational phases.
- Lead formal Mission Rehearsal events to train the mission team and validate mission design.
- Direct a team of spacecraft and subsystem engineers during launch and early orbit phases to commission the space vehicle for operational service.
- Act as the lead technical authority during mission operations for both space and ground segments, serving as the focal point for customer and internal leadership during critical mission activities.
- Oversee routine on-orbit operations for Millennium's fleet of spacecraft.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience with real-time satellite command and control systems.
- Familiarity with satellite subsystems, ground systems, space missions, and operational concept design.
- Proven track record of delivering operational products to customer environments.
- Willingness to support occasional off-nominal working hours during critical mission operations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active TS/SCI Clearance.
- Master's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams, particularly in resolving anomalous scenarios.
- Experience interfacing with external customers.
- Extensive knowledge of satellite systems engineering, including subsystems such as Guidance, Navigation, and Control; Electrical Power; Thermal Control; Telemetry, Tracking, and Command; and Propulsion.
- Experience with Spacecraft Command & Control software systems.
- Familiarity with iterative and agile processes.
- Understanding of orbital dynamics, maneuver planning, and orbit determination techniques.
- Experience in designing fault detection and response systems, as well as space vehicle autonomy.
- Proficiency in software and scripting tools such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Java, etc.
- Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
