Job Summary
As the Lead Engineer for Mission Operations, you will serve as the primary technical authority for Millennium's spacecraft in orbit. Your responsibilities will span the complete mission lifecycle, from the initial proposal phase through spacecraft and mission design, integration and testing, and ultimately, launch and operational phases in space. You will oversee all aspects of mission design, including the establishment of operational concepts, creation of on-orbit procedures, and the development of innovative spacecraft operation techniques tailored to each mission. The role demands composure under pressure, extensive knowledge of both spacecraft and ground systems, and the ability to address unexpected scenarios in real-time. You will hold direct accountability for Millennium's vital assets in orbit.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee all stages of the mission lifecycle, from proposal and mission modeling to design, integration, testing, launch, and on-orbit operations, concluding with decommissioning.
  • Establish operational requirements for ground and mission operations, ensuring alignment with spacecraft requirements.
    • Define mission operational concepts and design reference missions.
  • Architect the ground segment, including command and control systems, mission planning, data processing, and the necessary infrastructure to support all operations.
  • Design fault management and autonomy systems for the spacecraft, encompassing fault detection, response mechanisms, and onboard command and control.
  • Innovate and implement operational automation techniques to streamline daily operator tasks.
  • Develop and conduct simulations to validate mission designs and fault management strategies.
  • Execute in-factory tests on flight vehicles to ensure compatibility with mission designs.
  • Conduct essential ground segment testing, including radio-frequency compatibility and acceptance testing of critical assets.
  • Design and validate the mission sequence of events for commissioning, payload calibration, and operational phases.
    • Organize and lead formal mission rehearsal events to train the mission team and validate mission designs.
  • Guide a team of engineers during launch and early operational phases to ensure successful commissioning of spacecraft.
  • Act as the lead technical authority during mission operations for both space and ground segments.
    • Serve as the primary contact for customers and internal leadership during critical mission phases.
  • Supervise routine operations for Millennium's fleet of spacecraft in orbit.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with real-time satellite command and control systems.
  • Familiarity with satellite subsystems, ground systems, space missions, and operational concepts.
  • Proven track record of delivering operational products to customer environments.
  • Willingness to work outside standard hours during critical mission operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Active TS/SCI Security Clearance.
  • Master's degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Software, Computer, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary technical teams, particularly in resolving complex scenarios.
  • Experience interfacing with external customers.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of satellite systems engineering, including subsystems such as Guidance, Navigation, Control, Electrical Power, Thermal Control, and Telemetry.
  • Experience with spacecraft command and control software systems.
  • Familiarity with iterative and agile methodologies.
  • Understanding of orbital dynamics, maneuver planning, and orbit determination techniques.
  • Experience in designing fault detection and response systems, as well as spacecraft autonomy.
  • Proficiency in software and scripting languages such as MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Java, etc.
  • Strong organizational skills, self-motivation, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
