Role Summary:
The Surgical Technologist I operates under the guidance of a surgeon and registered nurse, ensuring the safe and efficient execution of invasive surgical procedures. This position is crucial in maintaining a secure operating room environment, ensuring all equipment is functional, and that surgical procedures are performed under optimal conditions for patient safety. Surgical technologists are knowledgeable in sterile and aseptic techniques, human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the tools and technologies required to assist physicians in performing invasive therapeutic and diagnostic tasks.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Execute technical duties across all operating room specialty areas, adhering to established standards of practice.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization of specialized instruments.
  • Adhere to aseptic techniques, proactively identifying and addressing any contamination issues.
  • Conduct surgical counts and follow protocols for discrepancies.
  • Label medications and solutions, monitoring their usage.
  • Assist in the identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.
  • Participate in the organization and setup of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes for optimal accessibility during procedures.
  • Support the surgeon by demonstrating an understanding of patient anatomy and surgical considerations.
  • Assist in case selection and instrument planning.
  • Adapt scrubbing procedures based on relevant information and communicate effectively with the surgical team.
  • Manage inventory, receive, and store supplies under the guidance of Surgical Services leadership.
  • Identify and report any defective instruments or supplies, assisting with the restocking of operating and procedure rooms.
  • Support the registered nurse during the intraoperative phase of care.
  • Operate complex equipment in the operating room, troubleshooting as necessary.
  • Serve as a mentor for Surgical Technician Trainees and act as a preceptor when required.

Additional Information:
Education Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED

Licensure/Certification Requirements:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification

Graduates of accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Programs, or those from Military Training Programs in Surgical Technology, are encouraged to apply. Formal education or training may be considered for individuals with over three years of relevant experience.


Professional Experience Requirements:
  • 0-3 years of experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Completion of service-specific competencies for Surgical Technologists.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Excellent organizational and prioritization abilities.
