Role Summary:

The Operating Room Specialist I operates under the guidance of a surgeon and registered nurse to ensure the safe and efficient execution of surgical procedures. This role is critical in maintaining a secure operating room environment, ensuring that all equipment is functional, and that surgical procedures are performed under optimal conditions for patient safety. The specialist is knowledgeable in sterile and aseptic techniques and possesses a solid understanding of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and the tools necessary to assist in both therapeutic and diagnostic operations. They also have the foundational knowledge and capability to perform surgical scrub duties as required.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Execute technical duties across various operating room specialties, adhering to established standards of practice.

2. Ensure proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and sterilization of specialized instruments.

3. Adhere to aseptic techniques, proactively identifying and rectifying any contamination or breaches in protocol.

4. Conduct surgical counts and follow established procedures for discrepancies.

5. Label medications and solutions, monitoring their usage.

6. Assist in the identification, preparation, handling, and labeling of surgical specimens.

7. Participate in the planning and organization of instruments, supplies, and surgical drapes to ensure optimal accessibility during procedures.

8. Support the surgeon by demonstrating an understanding of patient anatomy and any abnormalities affecting the surgical process.

9. Assist in case selection and planning for instrument requirements.

10. Adapt scrubbing procedures based on relevant information and communicate effectively with the surgical team, responding to emergencies as necessary.

11. Manage inventory, receiving, and storage of supplies under the direction of Surgical Services leadership.

12. Identify and report any defective instruments, supplies, or equipment, and assist with restocking as needed.

13. Collaborate with registered nurses during the intraoperative phase of care.

14. Operate complex equipment in the operating room, troubleshooting issues as they arise.

15. Mentor Surgical Technician Trainees and serve as a preceptor when required.

Additional Information:

Education Requirements:
● High School Diploma or GED

Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
● Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program; or
● Graduate of a Military Training Program in Surgical Technology; or
● Formal education/training may be substituted for individuals with 3+ years of prior experience as a surgical tech.

Professional Experience Requirements:
● 0-3 years

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Requirements:
● Successful completion of service-specific competencies for Surgical Technologists
● Strong communication and customer service skills
● Excellent organizational and prioritization abilities
