Position Overview:
The Operating Room Specialist works under the guidance of surgeons and registered nurses to ensure the safe and efficient execution of surgical procedures. This role is vital in maintaining a secure operating environment, ensuring all equipment is functioning optimally, and that procedures are conducted in a manner that prioritizes patient safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform technical duties across various surgical specialties, adhering to established standards of practice.
- Ensure proper maintenance, assembly, and sterilization of surgical instruments.
- Utilize aseptic techniques, proactively identifying and addressing any breaches in protocol.
- Conduct surgical counts and follow established procedures for discrepancies.
- Label and monitor the use of medications and solutions.
- Assist in the preparation and handling of surgical specimens.
- Participate in the organization and setup of instruments and supplies for surgical procedures.
- Support the surgical team by demonstrating knowledge of patient anatomy and surgical requirements.
- Adapt scrubbing techniques based on situational needs and communicate effectively with the surgical team.
- Respond to surgical emergencies and adhere to hospital emergency management protocols.
- Manage inventory and storage of surgical supplies under the direction of leadership.
- Mentor and guide Surgical Technician Trainees as needed.
Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Completion of an accredited Surgical Technology or Nursing Program is preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory.
Experience: 0-3 years of relevant experience in a surgical setting.
Skills and Abilities:
- Effective communication and customer service skills.
- Strong organizational and prioritization abilities.
- Successful completion of specific competencies related to UNC Health Surgical Technologist.
